Remote and inaccessible, Ladakh is a land of esoteric culture, desolate landscapes, and soaring peaks. Only re-opened to outsiders since the 1970s, traveling here can still be a challenge. Yet with a little effort and perseverance, a Leh Ladakh tour can be unequivocally rewarding, revealing a region of imposing vistas, venerable monasteries and a very distinctive way of life.

Magic Markha Valley

The Markha Valley Trek was a truly memorable experience. The landscape, wildlife and vegetation, the light, the culture and peaceful atmosphere of Ladakh are unforgettable and we were fortunate to experience it 'up close'. The trek was superbly organised, with expert and supportive leadership from Valerie Parkinson. The camping experience was great and the local team was full of joy and very competent. We were very well looked after! I enjoyed the excellent company of my fellow trekkers and appreciated the way in which some of the more challenging sections of the trek were paced and supported. As well as the trek, there were excellent visits to monasteries, and good accommodation in Leh and Delhi. 2 weeks felt like 2 months - it was an intense and very satisfying experience all round. Thanks for everything.

Beautiful Wilderness - Ladakh: The Markha Valley

An outstanding trek in a wonderful arid, mountainous environment where rocks gleam a wide variety iridescent colours, where lammergeiers and golden eagles circle above as marmots sit sunning themselves on the rocks below and where blue sheep have you gasping in amazement at their sure footedness on craggy rocky slopes. The isolation of the trek is special with just a few sparsely inhabited villages being passed. The range of temperatures from very warm during the day to very cold at night combined with the altitude of the passes and the rough stony ground of the riverbeds hemmed in by large rockfaces creates a wonderful feeling of challenge and exploration. The timelessness of the Buddhist monasteries encountered further enhances the experience. An amazing trip!!

TGR Ladakh: The Markha Valley

An outstanding trip offering a wide range of experiences and inspirational moments. As always, the trip was well led, well organised and offered excellent value for money. Some of the trekking was quite strenuous and tricky under foot but overall it more than lived up to our expectations as all the effort was rewarded with spectacular views.

Makrha Valley

This was a great experience the Markha Valley is truly unique part of the world. We arrived a in Leh a week after heavy rains and closed the track due to flooding and some land slides. The tour company's team worked extremely hard to plan an alternate route if we could not do the Markha trek. Luckily the Markha valley track was reopened and we were able to do the planned walk. The views the landscape the local people all well and truly exceeded my expectations.

Leh Ladakh — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Tour Highlights

  • Don’t miss Leh, Ladakh’s capital, that boasts monasteries, a former palace and an atmospheric old quarter that is ideal for exploring on foot.
  • Visit ancient monasteries that are at the heart of Ladakhi culture. Some of the most important include Lamayuru, Tikse and Alchi.
  • Make the most out of the rewarding trekking opportunities Ladakh offers. Trails range from relatively simple two-day walks to much longer paths that will test your endurance and resolve to the limit.
  • Travel to Nubra Valley for striking terrain, isolated monasteries and the chance to catch sight of the mighty Karakorum mountains. Access is via the pass at Khardung La, one of the highest in the world open to motor vehicles.
  • Head to Tso Moriri Lake to the southeast of Leh for abundant wildlife, barren countryside that is almost devoid of human habitation and views of some of Ladakh’s loftiest peaks.

Travel Tips

  • Leh and much of the rest of Ladakh lies well above the height at which altitude sickness can set in. Plan on allowing yourself a day or two to acclimatize before undertaking any strenuous activities — especially those arriving by plane.
  • Permits are required to visit some areas, notably the Nubra Valley, Rupshu (including Tso Moriri) and others. The necessary ‘Inner Line Permit’ is available at the District Magistrate’s Office in Leh, but it is easier to pay a tour operator there to obtain it for you. Some other sensitive border areas still remain completely off-limits.
  • The best time to go on a Leh Ladakh tour is from late June to late October when daytime temperatures are comfortably warm — although nights can still be cold. Winter temperatures are punishing, and from December to February, temperatures can drop to -40° and below.
  • Around Leh, buses are reliable, but to reach more distant locations, you will need to arrange alternative transportation. One option is to hire a taxi for the day. Alternatively, it is possible to rent motorcycles – but be aware that roads can be poor or non-existent.
  • It is possible to fly in but taking the road into Ladakh from Manali to Leh is much rewarding. This breathtaking journey requires two days or more, taking you through a remote region of unsurpassed mountain scenery.
