Guest reviews from travelers on tours in and around Athens

A lovely trip from start to finish, great leader, good group and just loved the different Greek Islands. The itinerary was just right with plenty of free time for relaxing.

Review. Walking in the footsteps of Paul; Stylianos (Tour Guide) was above and beyond in his knowledge of what we saw; moreover, his “sidebar” knowledge of the country and political history was top notch! Definitely covered a lot of sights in our 10 days? Memories, our/my first ever cruise 🚢, and visiting both the Acropolis museum and monument on top of the hill.

There were many highlights of this tour (in October)! The food was excellent - both the breakfasts in the hotels and the restaurants recommended by our tour leader George. The hotels all had very good accommodation. The guided tour of the Acropolis in Athens was fascinating. The 7 hour ferry ride from Athens to Naxos was tedious but smooth and comfortable. Naxos is a charming island - we loved the old town with its narrow, winding streets. The 5km walk to Apiranthos was very enjoyable, with wide views and the jangling bells of the goats. Then on to Santorini - what a stunning landscape! Discovering its volcanic history was fascinating, and the 10km hike along the caldera was tiring but gave fascinating, varied things to see. The prehistory museum in Fira with its nearly 4000 year old frescoes was amazing. And the boat trip was exciting as we visited and hiked up a recent volcanic island, and enjoyed a tasty dinner and a sunset on board. Throughout the trip our tour leader George was well organised, patient, knew many good restaurants and had a lovely sense of humour. Plus he taught us a lot about Greek history and culture. This tour is highly recommended!

Our tour manager was super. She made every experience perfect. She made our group come together seamlessly. She knew everything about everything: about shopping, restaurants, historic sites, traditions and culture. A fun, exciting experience!

Our guide Charlotte was the amazing...very knowledgeable, organised and efficient {a lot of coordinating transport from island to island}. Most of all she has a wonderful kind and caring personality...and managed to smile all the time!

If you get the driver and tour leader that we got everything works out well. Also each of the guides were very knowledgeable and pleasant. I would let future tourists ignore your luggage restrictions as no one else on our tour adhered to them and it was not a problem.

Athens - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Travel Highlights

  • Nestled on an old citadel overlooking the Greek capital, Acropolis is the birthplace of democracy and the crown jewel of Athenian ancient sights. Acropolis’ most important architectural feat is the Parthenon, a magnificent temple that dates back to 5th century BC.
  • At the foot of Acropolis, you will find Plaka, a historic neighborhood characterized by quaint cobbles alleys, neoclassical architecture and old Roman-era ruins.
  • A quiet inner-city oasis, the National Garden spans 38 acres of luscious vegetation, as well as duck ponds and a small zoo.
  • Syntagma Square, a gorgeous plaza lined with shops, cafés and neoclassical mansions, represents the heart of the city and a central meeting point for all Athenians.

Travel Tips

  • Any trip to Athens simply wouldn’t be complete without trying a bona fide Greek souvlaki. Best places to do so can be found along the Mitropoleos Street, where you can fill your belly like a true Greek god.
  • If you’re planning your visit to Athens during scorching summer months, you might want to refresh yourself by checking out one of the capital’s numerous beaches, such as Vouliagmeni and Cape Sounion.
  • Due to inflated prices and unbearably hot weather, you might want to plan your holidays in Athens outside of peak summer months (July and August). Spring, early summer and fall tend to be the most pleasant months for sightseeing, as there is still plenty of sunshine, but the temperatures tend to be more moderate.
  • The most efficient way to get around Athens is by using the metro. You can either purchase single journeys or an all-day ticket, which might be convenient if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing.
