Follow in the footsteps of Vlad the Impaler and discover the incredible castles and towns of Wallachia and Transylvania. Tackle the 1480 steps to the ruins of Poenari Castle, a residence of Vlad the Impaler. Sibiu is a postcard perfect medieval walled town; the numerous towers and churches offer plenty of spots to get a birds eye view over the red rooftops and cobbled alleys. Sighisoara is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts one of Europe’s best preserved citadels. It is also the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. Shrouded in mystery and legend, no trip to the region would be complete without a stop at Bran Castle. If you like the mystery around Transylvania, this five-day holiday is for you. Start off with Bucharest, before heading deep into Transylvania. Sibiu is one of Transylvania’s best loved towns with its impressive towers and churches, notably, the Council Tower which offers some of the finest views and the Evangelical Church, a stunning example of Gothic architecture. Biertan has a distinctly Germanic feel and is home to the must-see Biertan Fortified Church. Transylvania is of course best known for the iconic 14th century Bran Castle, legendary home of Dracula. But also not to be missed is Peles Castle. While much newer (construction began in 1873) Peles is a neo-Renaissance masterpiece and often ranks as one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. If you haven’t quite had your fill of Dracula-related lore, stop by Snagov Monastery—the alleged final resting place of Vlad the Impaler, the real life inspiration for Dracula.

Conveniently compact, it is possible to see several of Transylvania’s best sights in just a day or two. The picturesque medieval town of Brasov is a great base for visiting two of the region's most iconic and impressive castles—Peles and Bran. In the far north, Maramures offers an authentic glimpse of traditional life and is a region rich in folklore. To the east, you’ll come to Bucovina. The crown jewel of this region are the eight UNESCO-listed Romanian Orthodox monasteries. If you don’t have time to visit them all, Voronet Monastery is the most impressive and often referred to as the ‘Sistine Chapel of the East.’
