  • Revel in 21 action-packed days of exploring Nepal’s most popular area
  • Meet and immerse yourself in two incredible cultures
  • Trek along the challenging Thorung La Pass at 5,416 meters
There is no question about it, one of the most spectacular places in Nepal is the Annapurna Mountain range. Home to the 10th highest mountain in the world (Annapurna I), the Annapurnas feature incredible views and mountain vistas. There are deep canyons, hidden waterfalls, beautiful wildflowers and amazing people nestled in the very heart of the land.

The Annapurnas feature two incredible cultures that you will have the opportunity to learn about. One group is the Thakalies who live along the Kali Gandaki River with the world’s deepest gorge. The other is the Manangies who inhabit the Marshyangdi Valley.

The Around Annapurna Trek is considered a strenuous trek as it takes you across Thorung La Pass (elev. 5,416 m/17,769 ft) for the most awe-inspiring views of the majestic Himalayas. There is also a visit to Muktinath, one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas. The temples here are sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.

On this trek alone you will see three of the ten highest mountains in the world! These include Annapurna I (10th highest), Manaslu (8th highest) and Dhaulagiri (7th highest.) All three of these mountains are over 8000 meters in elevation. There are only 14 such mountains in the world.

While this is considered a strenuous trek, there is no reason not to take the Around Annapurna Trek if you are in good physical condition. Sure, it’s a challenge, but the rewards of scenery and cultural exploration far outweigh any difficulty you might experience. And with Buddha Treks and Expedition, you will have a highly experienced guide and porters to help you along the way.

This year, choose the Around Annapurna Trek!

You arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. From here you will be taken in a private vehicle to your hotel by your guide from Buddha Treks & Expedition where you can rest or take a short walk around the Thamel area.
3 Star Hotel
The day will be spent orienting you to the unique culture and charm of Nepal as found in the Kathmandu Valley. In the morning, visit Swayambhu (Monkey Temple) with its famous stupa that rises on a hill high above the valley floor. Also tour Kathmandu’s Durbar Square, home of nearly 60 temples and the palace of the ancient kings. See the temple of the Kumari, the chaste virgin living goddess.

After lunch, visit the neighbouring city of Patan with its own unqiue Durbar Square and amazing carvings. We will also visit to Buddhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Asia and home to a large population of Tibetan refugees. All four places visited today are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

In the evening, return to your hotel to prepare for travel to the Annapurnas.

Today’s journey takes us westward toward Pokhara. Before we arrive, we will turn off the highway and travel to Bhulbhule in the Marsyangdi Valley. Travel time is around 7 ½ hours. Spend the night in a local tea house.
Guest house
Today marks the first day of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. We climb upwards to the village of Bahun Danda, which is situated in a very beautiful setting. We cross small streams and rejoin the Marsyangdi River. We pass fields of terraced farms.

Our destination is Jagat where we will spend the night.
Guest house
We continue to trek uphill, passing through bamboo forests. The Marysangdi River becomes narrower as its waters thunder through the narrow chasm with plenty of whitewater. We will pass through the village of Tal which features an open plateau, affording us amazing views of the snowcapped peaks.

Our destination is a tea house in the village of Dharapani.
Guest house
The trek continues upwards to reach the first Tibetan monastery on this trek. This monastery will give you the most awesome views of Mt. Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. These snowcapped peaks are most impressive from here as their white peaks contrast wonderfully with the deep blues of the Himalayan skies. We pass through dense forests of pine, oak, maple and rhododendron to reach Chame, the district headquarters of Manang District. Chame is known for its hot springs and a few more amenities than most of the villages up here.

Spend the night in a tea house at Chame.
Guest house
We are entering the territory of the Gurung people, an indigenous mountain tribal group that have for centuries formed the backbone of the Gurkha Soldiers of the British Army. These are the Manangies and their culture is very distinct. The trail rises in elevation for more incredible views. Before us at Pisang is the wide Manang Valley surrounded by amazing snowcapped peaks.

We will spend the night here in Pisang.
Guest house
Manang is a destination as well as a cultural experience. The people there are Buddhist, and you will see Mani Walls, prayer wheels and gompas (Buddhist monasteries). Manang is well known for its amazing mountain views. It is literally a scene out of a picturesque guidebook. You will stand in amazement as you behold this most beautiful of places. We will spend two nights in Manang.
Guest house
Today we will spend the day exploring the beautiful village of Manang. Because of the high elevation of this trek, it is important to take a day to allow our bodies to adjust to the thinner mountain air. Enjoy the cultural museum in the village, take a cup of tea with the local people or a short hike to Chula West for some more amazing views.
Guest house
We say goodbye to Manang and make our way upward again. We are leaving the forests behind as we cross above the tree line. There are yak pastures along the way where local farmers take their animals to graze in the high pastures through the summer months. At Letdar, we spend the night in a local tea house.
Guest house
It’s a day of dramatic cliffs overlooking beautiful valleys. Keep a watch for the blue sheep that inhabit the high alpine areas of the Annapurnas. They are often seen in the meadow of Thorung Phedi where we will spend the night in a local tea house.
Guest house
Today we reach the high point of the trek: Thorong-La Pass. This is an especially long day of trekking as we make our way upwards to reach the pass for the finest views of the western Nepal Himalayas. It’s a steep path, but well worth the effort for the most incredible views you can imagine.

After stopping to take pictures, it’s then downhill to reach the pilgrimage site of Muktinath where we will spend the night.
Guest house
In the morning, explore the sacred temples of Muktinath. Muktinath features an ever burning blue flame as well as 108 beautifully carved spigots of water that constantly flow from the temple. The trail will take us to Marpha village for the night. On the way, we will pass through the village of Kagbeni which is a medieval village known for its animist animal statues. They represent a mixture of Tibetan Buddhism and the ancient Bön religion that is still practiced in some of the more remote areas. It is a much shorter day of trekking, giving us plenty of time to explore Muktinath.
Guest house
The views of Dhaulagiri will amaze you today as you gaze upon the 7th highest mountain in the world. It is a day of extremes as you also descend into the world’s deepest valley. At the village of Tukuche, there is a 200-year-old distillery where you will be able to sample delicious fruit brandy.

We will spend the night at a tea house in Kalopani.
Guest house
We are heading for the hot springs of Tatopani where we can soak those tired muscles. On the way, we pass through a narrow gorge with a spectacular waterfall.

We will spend the night in Tatopani at a local tea house.
Guest house
It’s uphill today as we make our way to the village of Ghorepani. It is a climb, but the views will more than make up for the challenge of the day. Spend the night at Ghorepani.
Guest house
The morning begins before sunrise as we make our way to the top of Poon Hill (elev. 3210 m/10,531 ft.) to watch the sun rise above the Himalayas. Poon Hill is famous in the Himalayas for its fabulous sunrises. We will watch the sun rise, turning the peaks from grey to reddish orange and finally a brilliant white. We return to Ghorepani for breakfast, and then its back on the trail to Tikhedhunga, passing through dense jungles along the way. We will spend the night in a local tea house.
3 Star Hotel
It’s our final day of trekking as we make our way to the village of Birethanti (1025 m/3,363 ft.) We will pass by a very large waterfall today as well as through bamboo forests. Once we reach Birethanti, it is just a one hour drive to the lakeside city of Pokhara where we will spend the night in a hotel with a hot shower.
3 Star Hotel
After breakfast, it is a return trip to Nepal’s capital city. It takes between 6 – 7 hours to make the journey by first class tourist bus, passing by fast flowing rivers and through the Trisuli River Valley. We finally cross the pass into Kathmandu where we will spend the night at a hotel.
3 Star Hotel
Today’s exploring includes the historic city and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bhaktapur with its old royal palace and temples. We will also visit Pashupatinath, the holiest site for Hindus in Nepal and another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spend our last night at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Good to know
A TYPICAL TREKKING DAY A typical day revolves around the Nepal sunrise and sunset, rather than any Western time schedule. The day starts with an early wakeup call. You then pack up your gear and enjoy a rousing breakfast before starting your morning’s walk. The sirdar will already be organized and have assigned loads to porters and your group will then set off on the trail at a leisurely pace, enjoying the view and stopping to take photographs. After 2-3 hours walk you stop for lunch. This lasts for about 90 minutes which gives you time to relax, or explore the local village. The afternoon’s walk is usually shorter and we arrive at the campsite or tea-house in plenty of time to relax and savor the surroundings. Later in the evening dinner is served, giving you an opportunity to sample the delicious food, talk over the day’s events, and look forward to another special day on the trails of Nepal. HEALTH ISSUES We recommend that all clients consult their doctor to discuss the health issues associated with their trek. We also recommend that clients bring their own personal first aid kit to supplement the comprehensive first aid kit carried by the Trek Leader. VACCINATIONS REQUIRED Please ensure that you allow at least 1 month to complete a course of vaccinations. Whilst your personal doctor will be the final authority, we recommend the following : • Poliomyelitis • Typhoid • Tetanus • Rabies • Meningococcal • Immunoglobulin (for Hepatitis A) MALARIA Nepal is listed as a country for which malaria prophylaxis is advised. We will not be visiting any malarial areas on the treks, however you may wish to consult your doctor about the need to take malaria pills. Trekkers who plan to do rafting and jungle excursions are advised to take the necessary medication to protect against malaria. ALTITUDE SICKNESS Many treks in Nepal can take you quite rapidly to high altitudes, so you need to give your body time to acclimatise. If you ascend faster than your body can acclimatise you will start to develop symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). A headache being the most common symptom, others are nausea, vomiting, fatigue, loss of appetite, dizziness and sleep disturbances. The best way to acclimatise is to ascend slowly and gradually. The common wisdom is that you should take 2-3 days to reach 3000m – If flying in to above this height remember to take extra acclimatisation days (for example flying into Lukla). Once above 3000m, you should sleep no more than around 300m above your last nights altitude, and take a rest day every 3 days (or 1000m). At times it can be difficult to stick exactly to this schedule, as villages aren't always conveniently placed for acclimatising, so you should think of the 300m as an average. During the day it is okay to trek higher as long as you descend to sleep. Remember the mountaineer’s saying "Climb High, Sleep Low". If at any time you get symptoms of AMS you should not climb higher until they are gone. If they persist then you should descend to below the height where they first started. Only start to climb again when they have gone. All of our itineraries allow for a proper acclimatisation schedule, and of course on our private departures you have the freedom to go slower if you are finding it tough - everyone acclimatises at a different rate. Please also consider your guide and porters and watch for signs of AMS in them. They are not immune to AMS. You will find a graph below detailing the acclimatisation schedule. It shows the ideal acclimatisation schedule against suggested itinerary. We always aim to get as close to the ideal as possible taking account of such things as available accommodation and camping spots with water etc. INSURANCE We INSIST that an appropriate insurance policy is taken out which covers travel in isolated and mountainous areas, and which also includes helicopter rescue. We recommend that you consult a reputable insurance agent or insurance specialist. RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT Footwear: Trekking Boots, thick socks, light socks, camp shoes. Clothing: Down or fibre Jacket, filled waterproof jacket and trousers, sweater or fleece jacket, warm cotton trousers, shirts and T-shirts, shorts, long underwear, wool hat, sun hat, gloves, bathing suit, track suit. Other Equipment: Sleeping bag (4 seasons), down jacket, daypack, water bottle, sun cream, sunglasses, flashlight with spare bulbs and batteries, lip salve, gaiters. Optional: Insect repellent, toilet articles, note book & pen, toilet roll, laundry soap, pocket knife, towel, sewing kit, plasters, binoculars, camera, film, cards and personal medical kit.
