Standing proud and sometimes angry, Arenal Volcano towers into the sky at 1,657 metres and is the centre piece of Arenal Volcano National Park. Situated between the Guanacaste and Tilaran mountain ranges, Arenal Volcano is located near the town of La Fortuna — 140 kilometres north of San Jose. The volcano is situated inside the national park which is further surrounded by the massive Arenal Conservation Area which is home to another sixteen protected areas.

Loved this one..

This country is so diverse and exodus shows you that from the start! We started on the Caribbean side at Tortuguero and basically got soaked the whole 3 days we were there, it rained and it rained but our group got on with it with a smile. That area would have been wonderful if the weather hadn't been against us but it was what it was! We still suffered a bit of bad weather at Arenal and i never got to see the volcano as the cloud was on top of it all the time, the walk was lovely up to it though and the landscape is beautiful. The weather started to improve as we travelled over to the pacific side , the birds and the wildlife are abundant , we saw that many sloths on this trip we stopped taking pictures of them ha There are some long drives in this trip but never more than a couple of hours on the road without stopping, lots of views to look at and of course we stopped if the driver or guide saw anything interesting to see as well, (a couple of macaw's were spotted and we pulled over to get some great photos) The wildlife is all around you if you take the time to look, the leaf cutter ants and the ant highways through the forest floor , the frogs , the sloths... so much to see! Whilst you don't have to be a fitness fanatic for this trip , i would suggest that you are able to walk long distances and tackle some steep slopes. You can always sit by the pool if you don't want to go on the hikes but you would miss out on the whole point of the holiday if that is what you aim to do. Exodus pull it out the bag every time with the accommodation , all the rooms were lovely and well chosen , its one of the reasons i have booked with Exodus 4 times now.

The country that keeps on giving

A fantastic and memorable experience. We would never be considered as bird watchers but you can not help getting caught up in the excitement of spotting some of the many exotic species of bird, reptile or mammals. A truly memorable holiday for all the right reasons. If you are considering visiting Costa Rica, then don’t wait!

A most memorable and inspirational two weeks.

Our Exodus Discover Costa Rica trip has been such a memorable tour. So much bird and animal life to see. We deliberately opted for a small group of 16 people so we would not miss a thing. We also chose a wildlife and birdwatching expert Guide. Staying for two nights at each location, in different climates (rain forest, mountainous etc) gave a great insight into this beautiful country of Costa Rica.

A great introduction to Costa Rica

A brilliant trip that shows the diversity of Costa Rica. From lagoons to rainforests to dry forests and cloud forests and beaches we saw so much of this lovely country and its flora and fauna. Highly recommended.

Excellent

The star of the experience was Gracie - how she made us a cohesive group. She kept everything on schedule. Gracie had a great smile and sense of humour. She was very knowledgeable about Costa Rica and we drove along on the bus she would give us information on agriculture, education, schooling, history of the country etc Great discussion on the challenges of the massive increase in tourism. Certainly would very much enjoy having Gracie as my CEO on my next trip

Costa Rica is a real adventure that our two teenage boys relished. A great mix of wildlife, adrenaline and travel that took us off the beaten track and gave us a taste of the real Costa Rica. My eldest son appreciated the fact we weren’t “stuck in tourist traps” but explored some of the history and culture of each region. Their highlights were the whitewater rafting, zip -lining, speed boat ride to Corcovado and hanging out in Dominical with the surf, monkey, iguanas and toucans. The hotels were really great quality and our guide was super knowledgeable on everything from wildlife to restaurant recommendations.

Arenal Volcano - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

On clear days, the symmetrical cone of Arenal Volcano is visible for miles and up until 2010, the volcano offered spectacular volcanic shows at night. Since then, the volcano has been quiet. Also within the national park is the older Chato Volcano towering into the sky some 1,100.

The Arenal Volcano National Park is a natural wonderland of native fauna, flora and wildlife of the region. Once you throw in some natural hot springs; waterfalls and numerous hiking trails, you know you are in a special place. As you wander the extensive circuit of trails, you witness fabulous scenery of ancient lava flows and secondary growth forests. A large majority of the native 850 bird species reside within the national park including the endangered resplendent quetzal and wildlife sightings range from white-faced capuchin monkeys to deer, coati and tapirs. Your eyes will feast on gorgeous plant life too, including heliconias, bromeliads and hundreds of orchid species.

Tour Highlights

  • No trip to Costa Rica would be complete without relaxing in one of the thermal springs near the Arenal volcano. The geothermal water gets heated underground and retunrs to the surface laden with minerals.
  • Go boating or fishing on Lake Arenal which supplies 12% of the country’s electricity.
  • Hike or ride on a horseback to La Fortuna waterfall and take your swim suit.
  • Try an exhilarating zipline tour or walk through the lush canopy on a series of hanging bridges.

Travel Tips

  • The only place to stay within the park boundaries is the Arenal Observation Lodge and Spa. You can get a spectacular view of Arenal by climbing “The Nest”, an observation tower located within the Lodge.
  • La Fortuna has a plethora of accommodations from camping to hostels to spa resorts.
  • Arenal Volcano National Park is a 3-hour trip from Liberia or San Jose. You can also find a variety of half and full-day excursions from the Guanacaste region.
  • Expect crowds during high season (December to mid-May). This is the most visited volcano in Costa Rica.
