A great holiday in a beautiful place I’d never been to before. There were some challenges with the weather as heavy rain fell on several days, but careful management of the itinerary by Grega our leader meant that we did all the planned walks, albeit some were in waterproofs. The accommodation was not my favourite as our room had visible dust and cobwebs, some with resident spiders, but overall this was a great holiday. As ever the group of travellers is important and part of the experience, a great group. If you haven’t been to Slovenia get it on your wish list, you won’t regret it.
Brilliant trip, Slovenia is the hidden gem of hiking in Europe. Far away from the crowds of the Amalfi Coast, Dolomites and Mont Blanc you have uninterrupted days to yourself on the mountains peaks!
I had a complete blast on this trip, everything about it was fantastic! oh except Slovenia has the largest wasp population in the world! I had been expecting a wet soggy week but the weather was fanstastic, the group was one of the best I've travelled with, the pension was lovely, the guides top notch. I have travelled to over 65 countries and never go anywhere twice - I would go to Slovenia again in a heart beat and that for me says it all.
Overall this trip was fantastic. Cycling is such a great way to experience these countries. Stunning scenery through Slovenia, the road surface and bike paths were in excellent condition. Accommodation great; excellent breakfast choices. My wife chose to ride an E-Bike; really good quality ’Specialised’ step through bike.I was provided a ‘hybrid’ bike. Speaking as an experienced MTB, Road, Gravel and bike path cyclist, the section of the Parenzana from the north of Croatia to Porec, is best suited to a Mountain Bike. If I was to ride this section again I wouldn’t settle for anything less than a Dual Suspension E-MTB, with 2.4” - 2.6” tyre diameter or bigger. If you don’t have this, be prepared for a bumpy ride. On the last day of riding I woke to a flat tyre. Unfortunately the spare tube provided had the wrong sized valve. Luckily the place we stayed at had a repair kit and I patched the tube. But after 10km on the rough gravel surface it failed. The company promptly organised transport and we were picked up & taken to Porec to the closest bike repair shop. Communication with the company was always excellent, prompt responses & helpful. We would highly recommend this cycling trip with mountain bikes.
Four star rating because the explore trip description was out of date. Whilst advertised as a rail adventure we had very few train journeys (even counting in the rail trip that had to be cancelled due to landslide flooding and earthquake). The train stock described as ex soviet union had apparently been for some time replaced by more modern carriages. Other itineries were also different, but all of the changes were good. Our tour leader Filip was beyond excellent. Always cheerful and completely unfazed. For example, by the sudden cancellation of the train journey form Sarajevo to Mostar,. He very quickly reorganised transport arrangements with the bonus that we also travlled through an extra nationl park. Very knowledgeable about a vast range of Balkan related topics. Kind and considerate, especially to those of us whose speed of walking was slower than the rest of the group. The guides were all good with the standout being the guide to the Sarajevo tunnel. Suggest you include this as an integral part of the future tours. I booked with the complete knowledge that the tour would be full on but, like other group members, would suggest that the intinerary should be relaxed a bit. Hotels OK but breakfasts were standard 'continental' so, unless this is what people in the Balkans eat, lacked any local flavour.
Full on, busy, enjoyable trip. I wouldn’t describe it as a rail adventure as mostly we travelled by bus. Worth noting that towards the end of the season some train routes do not run. Jammed packed itinerary and a great way to see so many countries. The city guides were excellent, in particular, Sarajevo, Zagreb and Mostar. A couple of times a felt we could have left earlier in order to arrive at our next destination a bit earlier. Very varied. For me the highlight was definitely Sarajevo. Would really recommend the optional tunnel tour; an absolute stand out. Accommodation was poor at times - particularly in Sarajevo. Food options limited for vegetarians. Smoking is everywhere in the region, even inside restaurants. Also worth noting that there is a lot of carrying bags on/off trains/buses and many hotels don’t have lifts. Tour leader was knowledgable, friendly and helpful. One slight negative for me was the pressure to attend optional group dinners.
