Enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes, fresh air and village life on this one-day hiking trip. This tour takes you hiking through the foothills of beautiful limestone mountains covered with jungle to visit local Hmong and Khmu hill tribe villages. The tour includes a scenic ride on the Nam Khan River and, during the wet season, a visit to the refreshing Tad Sae waterfall where you can swim and explore. Funds from this tour help support the local community.
Start with a morning transfer 25 minutes out of town to our Tiger Trail Adventure Camp. Cross the Nam Khan River by boat to the trail-head and begin our day hike through rice paddies and middle canopy. Our first stop will be a Khmu village named Ban Houay Fai, where the local children are likely to greet you with curiosity and smiles. Your guide will introduce you to the local life and customs.
Continue along ridges, limestone grottos and rocky slopes for lunch at Ban Tinpha, a Hmong village from which this trail gets its name. Mountains and valleys offer many opportunities to experience a variety of flora and fauna. Stop, look, listen and ask your guide about the life teeming around you. Weave your way through paddies and countryside. Chat with villagers and ask questions about life in Laos.
End in the riverside village, Ban Houay Yen. Our boat will be waiting to take you down a beautiful stretch of the Nam Khan with a stop at the Tad Sae Waterfall. Relax and soak in Tad Sae Falls after a day of trekking before returning by boat and vehicle to Luang Prabang.
The total trek is about 12 km, taking 4-5 hours through deciduous forest and farmland.
Please note: During the low water season (February to July), the Tad Sae Waterfall can be very low or dry and may be omitted.

This tour will serve different activities based on 2 different seasons: high water season and low water season. It will be a lot of fun during the high water season when the waterfall is flowing, but dirty roads can be more challenging. So it depends on your preferences to choose the one that best suits you.
Here is the detail program for each season:
High water season (August to January):
At the departure time around 8 am, you will be welcome at the bike shop by a local tour guide. You will be given a well-maintained mountain bike as your main transportation of your bike tour.
You will start the tour by cycling from the city center to Wat Pa PhonPhao temple, the first destination of the tour. You will not only visit and enjoy the fantastic beauty of this golden temple but also get a great view over Luang Prabang city.
Then, you continue riding your bike along a paved road through the teakwood forests and rice paddy fields. After enjoying the beautiful landscape with fresh atmosphere, you cycle along the Nam Khan River to visit the resting place of Henry Mouhot, an Anglophile French naturalist widely known as the “discoverer” of Angkor Wat.
After visiting the tomb, you continue biking through villages and past jungle-covered mountains until you reach the pier located on the banks of the Nam Khan River. Here, you will embark on a boat to cruise up the river to Tad Sae waterfall where you’ll have lunch in a beautiful landscape. After lunch, you can swim in the jungle. In addition, you can see and take photos of elephants there. It’s advisable that you buy some bananas and feed the elephants.
You then get on boat to head back to the camping site. You cycle back to Luang Prabang city following a route with beautiful scenery.
The tour ends about 5 pm.
Low water season (February to July):
In the low water season, Tad Sae waterfall is dry. You will then take a boat ride and walk into the jungle to see baby elephants instead of the waterfall. However, it still depends on the location and availability of the elephants.

Challenge yourself and experience a different world off-the-beaten-path, high in the mountains and surrounded by jungle on this full day hike.
Begin with a morning drive to Ban Xieng Lom, a rural Nam Khan riverside village located at the base of a huge mountain. We'll cross the Nam Khan on a small boat to begin the hike and then head through the jungle up to a mid-mountain Lao Theung village (Khmu).
Taking care not to disrupt the serenity of this isolated area, we can observe locals as they engage in daily tasks. You'll have the chance to ask questions and wander around in the small village. Your guide will be happy to translate your questions.
Waving our goodbyes, we enter a different world dominated by jungle, soaring limestone rock faces and flourishing ferns. Edge forward along a steep, narrow, rocky track and ascend to our final destination, sharing the trail with passing villagers on their day's pilgrimage to market.
After a short but steep walk, we finally arrive at the Lao Sung village (Hmong), an isolated and quaint village high in the mountains, overrun by roaming livestock. The local kids are likely to give you a warm welcome with laughter and smiles. Here we'll enjoy lunch in a local, humble home. Listen to the stories about the various cultures, play with the children or ask questions about the ways of life up here.
After this tranquil pause, we start our descent back through other small villages along the way. You will follow a little stream and see villagers on their way back from the market or fields until you reach the Nam Khan river. After a short boat ride, we'll be back to our starting point.
The total distance is 17 km (11 mi).
Difficulty level: medium to difficult.
The hike usually takes 6-8 hours, depending on conditions.
