Our tour guide Tarik was excellent, as was the itinerary. Some accommodation was good, one definitely was not so good, but it didn’t spoil a great trip in a fascinating country. I’m already looking at options for my next trip.

Tarik was fantastic. He was so enthusiastic, knowledgeable and just an all round great guy. I’ve been on a few Explore trips now and I’d say he was my favourite guide along with Alex in Georgia. They’ve all been really good though! 😁

An excellent tour in a great and under explored country. A very engaging mix of history , culture , wildlife and experience of the countries day to day life. This was all made even more enjoyable by our superb trip leader Justin Wiltshire , who continuously went the extra mile to ensure the group had the best possible holiday.. The final days snorkelling trip was a truly unmissable day.

Great itinerary for people interested in Mayan history/architecture, with a good number of other interesting outings - towns and cities, churches, river trips and wildlife. Some long days travelling and the transport was was not very comfortable. Our guide, Joshua Flores, really made the trip. He was very knowledgeable, great fun, well organised and quickly helped established a sense of the group as a bunch of friends.

What an incredible journey. Tarik, our guide, is the perfect ambassador for the country he loves so much. Smart, funny, compassionate, knowledgeable and attuned to all of our needs. I would recommend him for anyone wanting to see Belize. The experiences were also well planned. The sunrise tour of Tikal is a must for anyone. While the 3:30 am start time may seem intimidating, it is an unsurpassed moment to watch the sun come up and listen to the jungle waking up. And the final day on Caye Caulker was likewise a peak experience. I will carry these memories with me forever. Areas for improvement: Some of the accommodations left something to be desired. We had bedbugs or poor plumbing in a few places. Also, Belizeans make so much delicious food; I would like to see tours include more "local" food options and not just menus that cater to western sensibilities. In Placencia, there is a company called "Taste Belize" that offers a food tour, which I did on my own. It was such an incredible enhancement to my journey and I think it would be a great addition to this. Culture is most often expressed through food, and this is a great way to learn about the people and the land. This is my second Explore tour and I'm not sure there will be a third. On both tours, the guides were amazing and the local offerings were excellent, hiccups aside. What I noticed, however, is that the tours seem to attract clients that take a very colonial perspective to the places they are visiting. I was a bit horrified by the way some of the guests spoke to or of the people and places of Belize. There was an expectation that the service level would match what you might find in the UK or the US, and some huffiness or snickering condescension when it didn't. There were also a number of remarks that were racially or culturally insensitive. I don't know how you address that, but I know there is a certain standard that guides are expected to meet in representing their country. Perhaps a reminder to guests that, even if they paid for the trip, there is a responsibility on them as well.
