Taiwan beckons cyclists with its breathtaking landscapes, and the "Taiwan Explorer by Bike" tour is your ticket to discovering the island’s diverse beauty on two wheels. Over ten days, this guided bicycle journey takes you from Kaohsiung to Hualien City, traversing coastal highways, lush valleys, and dramatic mountainscapes.
Pedal down the sun-soaked tail of Taiwan to Kenting’s white sand beaches, cross southern mountain ranges, and roll through Indigenous villages before tracing the Pacific coastline. The ride is as much about cultural immersion as it is about scenery—sample local delicacies in maritime towns, soak in hot springs, and spend nights in comfortable hotels. The route’s final days wind through the Rift Valley’s tranquil rice paddies and rivers before culminating in the awe-inspiring Taroko Gorge—the world’s deepest marble gorge.
What makes this trip stand out is its careful blend of leisurely cycling and rich cultural experiences, making it ideal for travelers seeking both adventure and authentic local encounters on an island still flying under the radar for many global explorers.
Arrive in Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s “Harbor Capital”, where we meet for a trip briefing and welcome dinner.
Our inaugural cycling day involves a jaunt to Taiwan’s southernmost point, skirting along the coastline, and getting our first taste of the peaceful countryside. We stay overnight near Kenting National Park.
From Kenting we cross the southern part of the central mountains, an area inhabited by Taiwan’s indigenous populations. We ascend gradually before rolling down to the east coast with sweeping views over the Pacific Ocean. We’ll spend the night at a small village on the coast.
We ride up Taiwan’s east coast, enjoying Pacific views along Road No. 9. Expect some climbs and descents as the mountains press close to the shore. After a detour to explore a National Forest Recreation Area, we arrive in the hot spring town of Zhiben.
Today marks our final coastal ride before heading inland. We cycle through a series of charming coastal towns, eventually reaching Chenggong. Here, we’ll visit a beautifully arched bridge and indulge in some fresh, delicious seafood.
Today we trade blue ocean vistas for visuals of emerald green as we enter the Rift Valley of Taitung. We traverse a mountain pass and spend the night at another hot spring hotel.
Today is all about the gorgeous Rift Valley, considered by many Taiwanese as the most beautiful part of the country. We cycle on an undulating route that hugs the foothills and takes us through numerous local villages while offering unparalleled views of the central mountain peaks.
Get ready for the final ride of the trip! We follow the Rift Valley to its northernmost point where we find ourselves back on the coast. This is also the gateway to the incredible Taroko National Park, home to Taiwan’s most awe-inspiring geological formations.
Our last day is off the saddle as we explore the natural wonders of Taroko Gorge, the world’s deepest marble gorge. While we won’t be biking, we’ll certainly still be active as we explore the gorge's most impressive sites, such as the Swallow Grotto Cave, Baiyang Water Curtain Cave, and Tunnel of 9 Turns.
This morning we will drop you off at the Hualien train station for a return to Taipei. We can also arrange for a vehicle transfer if you prefer.
