Vast, windswept, and utterly untamed—the Mongolian Steppe Adventure offers a rare invitation to traverse one of the world’s last great wildernesses by bike, trek, and horseback. Over nine days, this guided tour from and to Ulaanbaatar takes adventurous travelers deep into Mongolia’s heartland, covering iconic sites like Mount Altan Olgii and the Tuul River, and immersing you in a nomadic way of life that has endured for centuries.
This trip is more than just a cycling tour; it’s an active exploration that blends 120 km of cycling, 37 km of trekking, and 61 km of horseback riding, each segment revealing new facets of Mongolia’s rugged beauty. Pedal across the endless grasslands, hike through rolling hills, and ride Mongolian horses alongside herders who have called these plains home for generations. Nights are spent under a canopy of stars in tented camps beside crystal-clear waters, topped off with a memorable stay in a traditional ger—a felt-covered nomad tent—offering an authentic taste of Mongolian hospitality.
Along the way, you’ll sample local delicacies like horse milk and cheese, learn ancient customs from hospitable hosts, and witness the raw expanse where horses still outnumber people. The combination of stargazing, challenging physical activity, and deep cultural immersion makes this tour an unforgettable journey for anyone seeking more than a standard vacation.
The tour’s USP lies in its unique blend of activities across Mongolia’s dramatic landscapes, giving you a full nomadic experience rarely accessible to outsiders. For those who crave adventure, connection, and discovery, this is a once-in-a-lifetime exploration of the Mongolian steppe.
We meet at the hotel for a trip briefing and a tour around the capital. In the evening, we gather for a Mongolian dinner before resting for an early start the next day.
Transfer out of the city and bicycle to a small pass (1,930 m) that is sure to get your blood pumping! We then take a swooping downhill across open steppe grassland to our tented camp by the Tuul River.
Another adventurous day. We pedal hard and climb high on rocky roads across rivers and past encampments of herders and their flocks. The reward is a swooping downhill back to our camp.
Switch mode and trek along the Sutsadav Ridge with splendid views. Then wind our way up to a high pass (1,900 m) on single trails made by wild animals and herders before camping by Mount Altan Olgii.
On this seven-hour trekking adventure, we conquer the towering 2,656-m Mount Altan Olgii, abundant with wildlife, among rewarding views of an endless sea of mountains and forests.
We rest our legs with Mongolia's age-old tradition. On horseback, we ride to the confluence of the Tuul and Terelj Rivers, before spending our last night in a tented camp with a chance to sample horse milk and cheese during dinner.
We continue on horseback and cross the river to Terelj National Park with lush mountains and interesting granite formations. Overnight in a Mongolian yurt, locally known as "ger".
We transfer back to Ulaanbaatar where you are free to explore the capital or rest after the long journey. We gather again for a farewell dinner and a fascinating Mongolian folk concert.
