Itinerary

Iceland may appear small on the map, but in person its enormous and cinematic landscapes barely feel like Earth at all. Get outdoors and into the action on this six-day active adventure through some of the most epic scenery in the entire country. Hike to the bases of pounding waterfalls, breathtaking in their strength. Travel through landscapes filled with towering peaks, massive glaciers, sprawling icefields, black sand beaches, and wild fjords. Set off on some of the best hikes in the region through spots like Múlagljúfur Canyon, the Skaftafell Glacier, Mt. Laki, and Brennisteinsalda volcano where you can bathe in a natural hot pool. Start and finish the trip in weirdly wonderful Reykjavík and discover how the people lucky enough to call this place home live full-time.

day 1 - Reykjavik/Vik/Kirkjubaejarklaustur

Arrival Day.

Upon arrival at Keflavik Airport the group will be scheduled for transfers to Hotel Cabin where breakfast will be available. From there, travel to Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall situated on the South Coast of Iceland close to the Ring Road for a quick look. From here set out on an introductory hike up Skógafoss waterfall. Soak in the impressive landscape and towering falls as you become acquainted with some of Iceland’s unique environments. Finish the Day at the hotel in Kirkjubaejarklaustur where you will enjoy an included dinner.

day 2 - Kirkjubaejarklaustur/Hof

After breakfast the group will transfer to Skaftafell, a nature reserve located in Vatnajökull National Park home to waterfalls, glacier lagoons, and black sand beaches. Hike to the largest glacier in Europe in the morning and then have lunch. In the afternoon hike from Skaftafell Visitor Centre to the picturesque Svartifoss waterfall, known as Black Falls for its basaltic rock in its background. Later, hike Skaftafell’s most astounding viewpoint at Sjónarnípa. Arrive to the hotel in Hof in the late afternoon in time for dinner.

day 3 - Hof/Kirkjubaejarklaustur

This morning visit Jokulsarlon, a glacial lagoon bordering Vatnajökull National Park in southeastern Iceland. Embark on a one hour hike through the iridescent chunks of ice on the black sand of Diamond Beach. Then, transfer to the Múlagljúfur Canyon for a 5km hike. This hidden gem in southern Iceland looks like it belongs in a fairytale. Think green mossy cliffs, birds flying through the mist, and a canyon so deep that it’s hardly crazy to imagine a dragon lurking behind a waterfall cascading straight from a mountain. Afterwards, continue to the hotel in Kirkjubaejarklaustur for the night.

day 4 - Kirkjubaejarklaustur

Start your morning off with a short one-hour hike through Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. The canyon is up to 100m deep and 2km long. You will walk deeper into the canyon with the river Fjaðrá running alongside you. From there the group will travel to the base of Mt. Laki and hike this magnificent mountain that was the sight of one of the greatest volcanic eruptions of all time. Then, visit a few more of Icelands famous sites and waterfalls like, Systrafoss, Systrastapi, and Kirkjugólf, before returning to Kirkjubaejarklaustur for the night.

day 5 - Kirkjubaejarklaustur/Reykjavik

Continue further into Vatnajökull National Park as the group travels to the Eldgjá chasm in the western part of the park. Spend close to two hours exploring and hiking near the Ófærufoss waterfall. Next up is a hike up Brennisteinsalda for a two and a half hour walk, ending with a soak in some hot pools. Travel to Reykjavik where you’ll spend the night.

The trail crosses many spectacles including the third biggest geothermal zone in the world, through yellow rhyolite mountains, over black deserts, past great canyons and finally into the verdurous valley of Þórsmörk. It is no coincidence that the “Laugavegur” hike each year attracts travellers from around the world in addition to being a great favourite amongst locals. Come see what all the fuss is about!Trekking: 5 daysWalking per day: 4-7 hoursTotal walking distance: 56 km. (35 miles)Altitude: 200-1100 m. (650-3600 feet)Maximum Ascent: 600 m. (1900 feet) Day 1: Reykjavík - Landmannalaugar - Hrafntinnusker.We take the scheduled bus from the BSI bus terminal at 07:00, that during the summer months drives the mountain tracks that lead to Landmannalaugar, passing by the Hekla volcano and other volcanoes in the Dómadalur area. Arriving in Landmannalaugar at noon, we have a lunch and then head south into the mountains. The trail takes us past small gorges, steaming hot springs and yellow mountain ridges. Arrival at Hrafntinnusker mountain hut, were we will stay the night, in the late afternoon.Day 2: Hrafntinnusker - Álftavatn.From Hrafntinnusker we descend down in the gullies of Jökultungur with hundreds of steaming hot springs and mud pools. Up there we enjoy fascinating views to the south to the Álftavatn area (Swan Lake), and the Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers. In the afternoon we arrive at Álftavatn hut where we stay the night.Day 3: Álftavatn - Emstrur.We pass at the foot of the green conic volcano of Stórasúla before entering the black deserts of Mælifellssandur. Heading towards another ancient and verdurous volcano, the Hattfell, we enter the Emstrur region where farmers used to graze their sheep in summer. Before arriving at the Botnar hut where we stay the night, we visit the magnificent Markarfljót canyon cut almost 200 m down into the rocks south of Hattfell.Day 4: Emstrur - Þórsmörk.We continue up and down through the small valleys and gullies of Emstrur, where the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier rises only a couple of kilometers away. Accommodations will be provided in comfortable mountain huts and all luggage will be transferred along the trail except for the last night where we carry a light backpack to a hut hardly accessible by vehicles. Trekking: 6 daysWalking per day: 4-7 hoursTotal walking distance: 78 km. (48 miles)Altitude: 200-1100 m. (650-3600 feet)Maximum Ascent: 900 m. (3000 feet)Day 1:  REYKJAVÍK - LANDMANNALAUGAR - HRAFNTINNUSKERWe take the regular public bus from BSI bus terminal, that during the summer months drives the mountain tracks that lead to Landmannalaugar, passing by the Hekla volcano and other volcanoes in the Dómadalur area. Even the elves have made themselves at home here. We spend the night in the Básar hut.Day 5: ÞÓRSMÖRK - FIMMVÖRÐUHÁLSWe climb up the hills leading to the pass of Fimmvörðuháls, walking along the Kattarhryggir ridges with views to the impressive mountain of Útigönguhöfði up to Morinsheiði heath. At the end of the Morinsheiði plateau we enjoy the view of the lava stream that flowed down from the Fimmvörðuháls volcano in March and early April 2010. As we gain height above Morinsheiði we come to the lava and then to the two craters Magni and Móði that erupted prior to the main Eyjafjallajökull crater. We head back to Þórsmörk with the magnificent view over the glaciers and this beautiful valley for our celebration barbeque dinner and night in Básar Hut.Day 6: ÞÓRSMÖRK VALLEYWe spend the last day in Þórsmörk,  the hiker’s paradise, where we have an abundance of choices between various paths. For example, we can visit the Sönghellir cave (“Song cave”), climb up the small mountain of Valahnúkur from where the magnificent views can be enjoyed, or hike into the beautifully carved canyon Stakkholtsgjá. This oasis between the mountains is also an ideal place to relax and just enjoy nature. Return to Reykjavik in the afternoon.
