The Ohiya Bambarakanda trek stands out as one of the most unique—and challenging—adventures I’ve ever undertaken! We set out around 7:30 AM after a light breakfast to fuel the journey ahead. The trail led us through a mesmerizing landscape, taking us past abandoned estates, rolling hills blanketed in lush green tea fields, and sparkling streams. A highlight of the trek was passing the breathtaking Bambarakanda Waterfall, Sri Lanka's tallest, plunging an impressive 263 meters. One particularly memorable feature was navigating the 'V-Cut,' a narrow path carved into towering rocky cliffs—a thrilling challenge in itself. The hike covered 20 to 23 kilometers and included a steep ascent that tested both stamina and resolve. The most grueling section was aptly named the Devil's Staircase, with its sharp zigzag turns and relentless inclines—a segment best suited for seasoned hikers. The trek took about seven hours, including well-deserved breaks along the way. There were moments when the difficulty made turning back tempting, but with no vehicle access and the determination to see it through, pressing forward was the only option. Despite the hardships, the journey was incredibly rewarding. The combination of natural beauty, physical challenge, and sheer perseverance made it an unforgettable experience—one I’ll always cherish as a testament to pushing through even the toughest trails.
