April to June — Spring / Good Season

This is when to visit Taiwan if you want to enjoy pleasant weather and a low number of tourists. The weather is warm throughout the country, but not too hot either. There will be some rainfall, but it certainly won’t disrupt your plans. Towards the end of May and June, the rainfall starts increasing in frequency. This is shoulder season, so you can expect your accommodation to be less expensive as well.

• Highlights: Spring is a beautiful season in Taiwan as the colors bloom in full force. This is the best time to visit Taroko National Park, Yangmingshan National Park, or the Alishan National Scenic Area to enjoy the stunning blooms and the wonderful weather. For those who love to hike, the Elephant Mountain is a great option - the trails are truly beautiful, and it will be easy for you to hike in this weather! The most exciting festival happening during this season is the Dragon Boat Festival, happening in May / June, where teams from all across Taiwan compete in the boat races.

June to August — Summer / High Season

Summer officially sets in towards the end of June and goes on till August. The temperatures go up quite a bit, and the rainfall also starts. The weather in Taiwan will be hot and humid, with June being the rainiest month. There is a chance of typhoons hitting the area during this season, so make sure you check the weather forecast before traveling. This is high season, due to the holidays, which also means that the tickets and accommodation get booked out early.

• Highlights: This is when to visit Taiwan if you want to stick to the northern part of the country, where the weather is bearable. Towards the end of the season, the beaches in southern Taiwan, especially those in Kenting National Park, offer a cool respite from the rains and summer heat. Another popular destination for this season is the stunning Taroko Gorge. You can also enjoy the birthday of Chenghuang at Xiahai City. It is celebrated with a lot of pomp and splendor, and you should definitely out on the experience!

September to November — Fall / Good Season

Autumn in Taiwan is absolutely beautiful. The weather in Taiwan is balmy and cold. The southern part of the country remains warm, but the north begins to cool down. There is little to no rainfall during this season, compared to the summer periods, so this is a good time to enjoy outdoor activities.

Highlights: This is a great time to visit the south and east Taiwan, especially the beautiful Taroko National Park. Since this is the ideal season for outdoor activities, this is the best time to visit Taiwan for those interested in visiting the Sun Moon Lake, Alishan National Scenic Area, or the Yushan (Jade Mountain). In September, the Taiwanese celebrate the Birthday of Confucius, and in October, the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. The latter involves a lot of delicious barbecues, and picnics in the great outdoors!

December to March — Winter / Low Season

Winter is the low season in Taiwan. December is the coldest month in Taiwan, so expect things to get a little chilly. The weather in Taiwan will be cold, but the temperature is rather mild, especially when compared to European winters. By February, some rainfall occurs across the country, but not enough for you to worry about your travel plans.

• Highlights: The biggest attraction of this season is the hot springs. Taiwan has over 150 hot springs, most of which are located in the beautiful mountains. There are amazing mountain retreats at Yangmingshan National Park, which will be cold, but isolated and charming. If you want to avoid the cold, the southern beaches will still be warm. The Chinese New Year (December - January) is a gala celebration all across the country.
