On the whole a great itinerary. I would drop the Sunderbans though, since the chance of seeing any wildlife while sailing for hours up and down the middle of the river is unlikely, especially since the animals are behind a fence. We had an excellent tour leader, Kiran who is warm, very informed and energetic and who certainly went that extra mile in solving problems and caring for everyone. The local guides who travelled with us were also great, as were the drivers. The hotels in India were the Summit hotels, an Indian chain. They are clean and quite well organised. However since those in Sikkim were out of town we were forced to eat dinner in the hotels which produced the identical menu. It would have been better to have spent the bits of free time we had in Sikkim in the towns themselves.
We had an absolutely amazing time in Bhutan. The people, the food, the sights and the natural beauty exceeded our expectations. Our guide, driver and trek crew were outstanding. Bhutan is a special place and we plan to visit again.

Step into the mystical world of Bhutan on the Festivals of Bhutan – Trongsa tour, designed with seniors in mind. Over 11 days, journey from Kathmandu to the secretive kingdom of Bhutan, famed for its ancient customs, breathtaking mountain scenery, and vibrant religious festivals. Experience the magic of the Trongsa Festival—the oldest in Bhutan—where monks in vibrant robes perform sacred masked dances, and the air buzzes with a carnival spirit. There’s immersing yourself in the secretive kingdom of Bhutan, then there’s timing your visit to take in the extraordinary Black-Necked Crane Festival. This annual one-day celebration, held at Gangtey Monastery, marks the winter return of the birds with masked dances, drumming and food stalls. It’s colourful, joyous, and spiritual. Beyond the festival, you’ll discover the best of the kingdom: cliff-perched Buddhist monasteries, still-alive ancient traditions and pristine landscapes fiercely protected by local laws.
This itinerary is valid for the Black Crane Festival only. For alternative festival departures in Bhutan, please have a look at Paro Festival, Thimphu Festival or Trongsa Festival.
