Known as the "Coca-Cola" route, the Marangu route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeast. It is the oldest, most well-established route. Many favour the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. Marangu is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut.

The 6-day Rongai route ascents Kilimanjaro from the north-eastern side of the mountain along the border between Tanzania and Kenya. This route retains a sense of unspoilt wilderness and offers a different perspective of Kilimanjaro by approaching the famous mountain from the north. Rongai is ideal for those who are not confident to hike steeper paths, those who want to avoid traffic, and those who want to enjoy a quieter hike. The Rongai route’s premier advantage is that it is one of the quietest routes on the mountain, although it becomes busier when it connects with the Marangu route just before reaching Kibo hut. The route also descends along the Marangu route, however, on this trip, the intrepid climber will retain a sense of wilderness and adventure by sleeping in tents and not using the A-frame huts of the Marangu route. Scenically, Rongai is extraordinarily beautiful as it travels through an unspoiled rain forest and remote wilderness area, although it is not as scenically varied as Machame, Lemosho and Shira. It is also preferred when climbing during the rainy season because the north side of the mountain receives less precipitation.

I had the privilege of being part of an amazing group on our Mount Kilimanjaro expedition. This team truly embodied the spirit of adventure, camaraderie, and determination needed to help us conquer Africa’s highest peak. From the very beginning, the group’s enthusiasm was contagious. Everyone brought unique strengths to the table, whether it was carrying our packs, cooking delicious meals, or making sure we were all comfortable. The teamwork was evident in every step we took, especially during the more challenging days when altitude and fatigue tested our resolve. Every morning we were greeted with coffee in our tents, a bowl of hot water to wash up, and a hot breakfast. We also had the luxury of a personal toilet. The porters packed everything up and carried our bags and had everything set up by the time we got to camp. They’re constantly refilling our water bottles and supplying hot water for tea and coffee. Every morning and evening we did a wellness check to make sure no one was experiencing altitude sickness. We had two guides who spoke perfect English to ensure we made it to the summit. To my incredible climbing team: thank you for the laughs, the encouragement, and the shared sense of achievement. I couldn’t have asked for a better group to share this adventure with!

The minimum days required for this route is five, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time period is quite low. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended when climbing Klimanjaro using the Marangu route. However, despite its immense popularity, we avoid leading climbs on the Marangu route. The route has the least scenic variety of all the routes because the ascent and descent are done on the same path and it is the most crowded route for that reason. Marangu is favored during the rainy season, where the hut accommodations are preferred over wet ground, or for those who only have five days to climb Kilimanjaro. The Machame route, also known as the “Whiskey” route, is now the most popular ascent route on Mt Kilimanjaro. Compared with the Marangu route, the walking days on the Machame route are longer and the walks are steeper. However, the scenery is spectacular and landscape interesting. The Machame route is considered a more challenging route, and is better suited for those with some hiking or backpacking experience. The Machame route is scenically beautiful and varied. Because it is a popular route there are increased numbers of trekkers. It approaches the summit from the southwest and descends using the Mweka route, rewarding climbers with views of the expansive Shira Plateau, an optional scramble up Lava Tower, a climb up the Great Barranco wall, and a traverse underneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field. Climbers sleep in supplied tents at designated campsites, and eat meals either outdoors (when it is warm outside and the sun is up) or inside a large dining tent, depending on weather conditions. Our staff will prepare all meals and set up and take down the tents. The Machame route is a highly successful route to the summit as you climb high and sleep lower because of position of the campsites. The climb high sleep low approach aids acclimatization and increases your chance of getting to the summit. After arrival at your accommodation in Moshi, you will have the opportunity to rest. Later there will be a meeting with the tour guides for a briefing about the trek and Mt Kilimanjaro. For those who only have six days to climb Kilimanjaro, this climb through the Machame route is the best choice because of its acclimatization profile. Compared to the other six day routes, the Machame route exposes the climber to higher elevations quicker (day three) which kickstarts the body's adaptation to altitude. However, this route requires that a person is in good shape to be able to tackle the challenging elevation gains and losses. In particular, day four combined with day five makes for a very challenging schedule. Day four is a full day of hiking from Barranco to Barafu. The 6-day Machame route is the most beautiful route up the famous Mount Kilimanjaro. The route is best suited to adventurous hikers looking for an authentic and rustic experience, as the route offers tented accommodation only, and all your equipment and supplies are brought up with help from a porter. A cook prepares all your meals. However, hikers will be rewarded with a scenic splendour that is not seen on the Marangu route, from late afternoon sunsets at Shira to the misty revelations of Kibo at the great Barranco Wall. The Machame route is normally completed in a minimum of six days. The added benefit to the six days means you are afforded the most valuable commodity on the mountain – time to acclimatize. This is our most successful and popular hiking route on Mt. Kilimanjaro, mainly as a result of the following two important factors. First, on day 3 of the hike, the topography of this route allows you to climb high and sleep low – as you start from Shira camp (3 847m) hike up to Lava Tower (4 642m) and then down to Barranco camp (3 984m) for overnight. Second, the summit attempt path from Barafu camp has less loose scree (rocks) compared to the summit attempt path from Kibo Hut, making it slightly easier to reach the crater rim.
