The pilgrim's trail to Santiago de Compostela is one of the great historical 'long distance footpaths' through Europe. According to legend, it all began in the 9th century when the bones of the apostle St James, beheaded in Palestine, miraculously appeared in a village in what is now Galicia. Word spread around the Christian world, reaching (among others) King Alfonso II of Asturias. The 'original' route became very popular in the early Middle Ages when areas south of the Cantabrian mountains were continuously at war. From the small unassuming town of Fornaci di Barga you'll enter the Apuane forests, climbing up through chestnut woods and dropping down through vineyards to the ancient village of Verni, home to an impressive series of limestone massifs rising up to 2000m. The Apuanes are famous for their scenery of white marble towers, abysses and the largest cave system in Italy. All aspects of the tour were outstanding. The itinerary was fairly rapid given we (my wife and I) opted for all the offered excursions. Having said that we did not feel it was too fast. The fact that there was only one hotel change allowed us to have more time overall to see the wonderful history and sites that are all over Italy. Our tour manager was wonderful. His knowledge and experience showed clearly in how smoothly the entire tour went. Our bus driver was amazing moving a large vehicle through the narrow winding streets of Rome, the Amalfi Coast and in between. The local guides were also excellent for the brief times we spent with them. All in all the tour was wonderful and worth every penny we paid.
