The eastern Adriatic coastline and its soaring mountains offer treasures as numerous as they are diverse. Local dances, music, and folklore abound, while the wine, olives and cheeses make every stop a delight. The road cycling is equally invigorating: sun-drenched Croatian cliffside roads wind high above the sea, while inland, we find ourselves deep in the rugged wilderness of Montenegro and the hushed rural valleys of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Our destinations are ancient towns imbued with a contemporary vibrancy, and their lively street life beckons us to join in.
Our journey begins in Cavtat, a picturesque port village near Dubrovnik. Riding south, we enter Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor, flanked by two massifs of the Dinaric Alps, leading us to the town of Kotor itself, deep within the twisting contours of the bay. The following day, we leave the waterfront for a loop ride in Lovcen National Park, with serious climbs that lead us to stunning viewpoints of the peaks and the chance to encounter wildlife along the way. After another night in Kotor, we cycle back out of the bay, and cross the border into the wilds of Bosnia-Herzegovina, reaching Trebinje for the night. From here, the landscape shifts to forested river valleys and small villages, still offering substantial climbing until we emerge on Bosnia’s short stretch of coastline at festive Neum. The following day, we ride north along the Peljesac Peninsula, a haven for gourmands with abundant seafood, olive groves and wineries, all connected by smooth, scenic cycling roads that help us work up an appetite. Transfer by ferry to the island of Korcula and enjoy the little port town. Our final day’s loop ride is an idyllic immersion in the island’s nature, its fisheries and wines. We transfer back to Dubrovnik for a final night dinner in the heart of the city, a fitting celebration of this exploration of the Adriatic and its many riches.
