E-bike Across Southern Albania

If you're searching for something a little different from your next European adventure, the contrast of the jagged Albanian Alps against the clear Ionian coastline is attracting more and more visitors to its relatively quiet tourism scene. Starting from the shores of Lake Ohrid, you wind along the rural mountain roads that border Greece, passing the wild Vjosa River surrounded by the peaks of the Gramoz, Trebeshina and Nemercka ranges. You'll find UNESCO World Heritage sites aplenty including the Ottoman town of Gjirokaster and the archaeological marvel of Butrint. As you grow ever closer to the inviting turquoise waters, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the Ionian and Adriatic Seas as they welcome you to the pristine beaches of the Albanian Riviera. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to visit traditional Albanian villages where you can immerse yourself in the culture, interacting with local people and enjoying authentic Albanian hospitality. Taste regional delicacies, from hearty mountain cuisine to fresh seafood along the coast, of course accompanied by the local wines and raki (a traditional Albanian spirit); these are a must-try! This two-wheeled journey through Southeast Albania is a perfect blend of adventure and discovery. Romania: Touring Transylvania by Bicycle

Emerging from a tumultuous history to a new era of peace and prosperity, Romania is a country on the rise and one of the most underrated cycling destinations in Europe. This tour of Transylvania, the quintessential Romania, brings us deep into a land of heartfelt hospitality, delicious cuisine, and pristine nature. Country roads lead us among densely-forested hills to reveal medieval villages huddled around elegant fortified churches. Along the way, taste award-winning Romanian wines made from western European and Eurasian appellations, and discover well-preserved handicrafts, musical traditions, and unique architectural styles developed from Romania’s fusion of influences, an exotic mixture found nowhere else. Stay the night in meticulously-restored noble manor houses and inns, evocative settings befitting this adventure. After your arrival in Romania, transfer to Tălișoara, a scenic village where our bicycles await. After an initial bike fitting, we will take a short ride to get our first impressions of the countryside, followed by dinner and a night in a 17th century manor house. The next day, we cycle from Tălișoara to Viscri, a restored village built by Saxon immigrants centuries ago, which the UK’s King Charles III has helped preserve, as a result of his Romanian family ties. There is much to explore in this revitalized community, where we will stay the night. The following morning, we will ride across a lush landscape, visiting restoration projects along the way, leading us to Cincsor, where we again stay in an atmospheric accommodation. The fourth day brings us to unforgettable Sighisoara, a UNESCO-protected fairytale town that inevitably conjures up images of Dracula. Take time to explore its winding streets on foot, and take in views of the surrounding Carpathian foothills at sunset. From here, we continue to Cund, a fascinating German settlement with many practicing artisans making wonderful products, and on to the Vila Vinea winery, where we have the chance to sample some excellent Romanian wines and locally-made cheese. The final day of riding brings us to Sibiu, a beautifully-preserved medieval walled city, and a fitting place to celebrate the end of our cycling adventure. After a final night celebration, rest well, and continue your adventures in Romania or onward from Sibiu or Bucharest. Join us on this 7-day journey into Transylvania, a realm of beauty that welcomes us warmly to share in both its rich history and its vibrant present!

Balkans Bicycle Tour: Romania: Road Biking The Transylvanian Alps

Romania: Road Biking the Transylvanian Alps

Romania is one of the most underrated cycling destinations in the world. With rugged mountains to rival the Alps, countryside to compare with the most scenic anywhere in Europe, surprisingly good roads with very little traffic, and thousands of years of history, Romania is a road biker's dream destination. Romania: Road Biking the Transylvanian Alps is both an unforgettable cycling trip and an immersion in the famed Romanian region of Transylvania, steeped in history, myth and legend, surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. Amazing rides link together medieval cities, villages huddled around fortified churches, wooded valleys, and soaring mountain peaks. Challenging climbs will be mixed with more easygoing rides and visits to UNESCO heritage sites, making for a fulfilling experience of the very best Romania has to offer. This is a fully-supported trip ideal for road cyclists, especially if you enjoy a good climb. We have planned the route carefully so that we have a nice balance between big climbing days and easier days. We meet in Bucharest and transfer to the village of Cincsor. Our first day includes our bike fitting, a short warm-up ride, and a welcome dinner. On the second day, we will ride the legendary Transfagarasan, cycling directly from the hotel and steadily climbing to a glacier lake, followed by a descent and return from the hotel. The next day, we will take it a little easier with rolling countryside riding into atmospheric Sighisoara, with its gothic architecture evoking the classic Transylvania. Staying in the heart of the town, we will have time to admire our surroundings this evening. The next day brings a moderate ride across the hills to Sibiu, Romania’s cultural capital with its noble Saxon history, art-nouveau facades, and gold-embossed church. There are also countless museums and dozens ofcoffee houses to relax apres-ride amid an ambience that could be compared to Girona or Tuscany. On Day 5, we ride out of Sibiu to an idyllic mountain resort where we can take in the beautiful vistas before descending to an open-air museum village, then circle back to Sibiu. The final day of cycling is the most challenging: we ascend to the Transalpina, the highest road in Romania. Ride to your heart’s content with the option of van support as we head skyward on a joyride along the twists and turns of this legendary road (as Cycling.co.uk puts it, “Romania’s highest pass combines perfect hairpins and pristine tarmac with jaw-dropping views.” At the end of the ride, descend 20 km and arrive at the manor house where we will spend the night, raising glasses of Romanian wine over a hearty dinner to celebrate our journey through Transylvania’s mountains. Join us on this 7-day adventure that takes us to both the heart and the heights of Romania’s most beautiful region!
