W Trek Tours and Trips

If you are looking to get out into the wilderness of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, see some truly dramatic mountain scenery, glimpse gigantic glaciers, and trek around stunning, glassy alpine lakes, a W trek tour could be the thing for you. This accessible and most famous of hikes in the Torres del Paine National Park isn’t overly challenging and it doesn’t require backcountry camping. With well-marked trails and stopovers in well-known campsites — and sometimes quite luxurious refugios — you don’t have to be a seasoned adventurer to explore this stunning region of the world.

Great Trip!!!

The trails were very well marked and easy to hike on your own. There is a clear itinerary of where you should be each night. Do not bring food, as there is an excellent and ample breakfast, lunch and dinner provided. The showers were also decent and at all the camps on the W trek and had warm water. The sleeping bags and mats were warm enough, although I did go in December, so summer season. Transfers were seamless. We had to wait for the ferry to make a second trip at the end, so a one hour thirty minutes delay, and the buses waited on us to take us back to Puerto Natales. Having everything booked took the stress out of trying to get my own sites and transportation, and meals being provided saved a lot on weight. Overall, no complaints and a great trip!!

Highly Recommended for Independent Traveler

This tour was certainly for the independent traveler, and we liked how much of it was left up to our schedule. We had a terrific experience and would recommend it.

We did the W in on our own (you really do not need a guide). We loved the views and always changing beauty of nature: From glaciers with blue lakes to wonderful soft mountains with flowers and forrest. Would always do it again.

I had trained in anticipation for this trek by doing several hikes with roughly the same weight I'd be carrying in Torres del Paine. I also had completed a half marathon in Patagonia so I was acclimated to the elevation. I'm very glad that I had the training before hand. It made the trek more enjoyable and I was able to keep a good pace.

My brother and I wanted to do a hike in South America when we landed on this trek. We prefer to plan our own trips as opposed to going on a tour. This self guided trek was the perfect compromise. It was very helpful to have food and accommodation taken care of for us. Would definitely reccommend for tour-goers and non-tour-goers.

The W circuit trekking at Torres Del Paine, Chile is amazing. I booked 5 day / 4 night self guided tour with travel agency Bamba Experience and everything is taken cared of. It was a really beautiful trip.

W Trek Tour — Highlights and Travel Tips

W Trek Tour Highlights

  • Embarking on a W Trek tour, you’ll get to see the iconic landmark that is Las Torres (aka The Towers) soaring over 2,500 meters above sea level.
  • Hike alongside the otherworldly blues of Nordenskjold Lake, reflecting the surrounding glaciers and skyscraping mountains like a huge, natural mirror and see if you can’t spot a grazing guanaco on the west side of the lake. We bet you can!
  • Trek to the Valle de Frances — or the French Valley — an area filled with pristine forest where the lush greens contrast with the cliffs of dark grey granite that rise like a giant’s castle.
  • Get up close and personal with the 6km wide Glacier Grey, located in the west of Torres del Paine National Park, as you make the epic round-trip trek and get unmissable views of the glacier from Mirador Grey.
  • Stay at remote, picturesque refugios such as Camp Los Cuernos, where you’ll have an incredible vista of the dramatic and jagged mountains known as Los Cuernos, part of the Paine Massif.

W Trek Travel Tips

  • Want to escape the crowds? How about doing the W Trek tour during the winter months? Though the days are shorter, with a winter hike you might have the view of The Towers all to yourself, instead of sharing it with hundreds of other hikers.
  • Book your accommodations way in advance, especially during the high season. During the winter, some of the refugios will be closed, so plan accordingly.
  • Thermals and layers are key to making sure you’re never too cold, or boiling in an impractical jacket. Choose lightweight materials, as your backpack will be with you the whole time, and a heavy load on a trek isn’t fun.
  • Make a start in Puerto Natales, the gateway to the Torres del Paine National Park, and get a bus to the park, specifically the Rio Serrano entrance; Bus Sur Company and Bus Jose Maria both leave twice per day from the city to the park, and a round-trip will cost you around USD 30*.
