Holidays in San Jose are not something most people on a Costa Rica tour get to experience. For most holidaymakers, the Costa Rican capital and its airport only serve as a transit point to the coast and the country’s famed beaches. However, a visit to San Jose can be incredibly rewarding because it offers a glimpse into everyday life in Costa Rica in a way you won’t be able to experience at the seaside resorts.

My experience with Explore was the best I could ever have. From the beginning of the organisation till the last day of the trip it was excellent. It was my first trip with Explore, but it will definitely not my last one. The group was great, 10 people, 2 couples, 6 solo travellers. Our guide Juan Carlos was excellent, he gave us a feeling of being a family , he knows everything about animals, plants , Costa Rica. He was always there for all needs. I would like to thank your company and all people who made this trip so wonderful. I can highly recommend your company and Juan Carlos as a Guide Sincerely Manuela Sass ( a German living in Vienna)

We've just returned from an adventure of a lifetime in Costa Rica. Had the best family holiday and saw so much amazing wildlife. Zip-wired above the rainforest canopy, white water rafted along the Rio Balsa, climbed volcano trails, enjoyed a family cooking class in the cloud forest region, learned about local cheese and chocolate and enjoyed eating them, watched a turtle laying eggs in the dark of the night, saw a sloth swimming in the jungle waterways and watched humpbacks breaching in the Pacific on our boat journey to Corcovado National Park. Everyday was an exciting adventure with an itinerary that kept the whole family happy. Covering several different regions, each with its own unique climate, the wildlife trip really did show off the best of Costa Rica. We were extremely lucky to have the most fantastic guide, whose knowledge and enthusiasm made our trip the best it could possibly have been. Perfect holiday in every way.

The accommodation was just for sleeping in but much more than adequate. The itinerary was fantastic - every day had at least one highlight that we'll never forget. The Explore leader was exemplary: friendly, approachable, ultra-knowledgeable and was happy to go above and beyond to show off his country of which he was rightly proud.

A great trip! I really liked seeing four very different destinations and the activities on offer meant it was an exciting trip. Plenty of opportunities to see wildlife - including unexpected whale watching. Some of the hotels are more basic but they didn’t detract from the overall experience.

The best time in Costa Rica

Our tour guide, Manny, was great - professional and friendly - and ensured we all had the best time in Costa Rica. It was so nice being able to have so many incredible experiences without having to think about booking them or how I was going to travel between them, even when dinners/ lunches weren’t provided Manny showed us some great places. The activities were all pretty amazing too!

San Jose - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Tour Highlights

  • Teatro Nacional, or the National Theater, is an opulent building located at the central square called Plaza del Cultura. It hosts a variety of theater performances, concerts and other cultural events.
  • Jade Museum, located in a modern, architecturally distinct building, holds an impressive collection of pre-Columbian artefacts made using this semi-precious stone.
  • Situated in downtown San Jose, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum treasures over a thousand gold, ceramic and stone artefacts made by various groups who have inhabited present-day Costa Rica.
  • La Sabana Metropolitan Park is a breathtaking urban green space that sprawls for 72 acres. It is the perfect place to unwind away from the capital’s hectic traffic.
  • San Jose is also a great starting destination for day trips in the wider region. Coffee plantations, historical cities and volcanos can be visited within an hour's drive from the main city center.

Travel Tips

  • If you truly want to soak up the vibrant ambient of the Costa Rican capital, head over to the Barrio Amon, an area nestled north of Plaza Espana. In this historic neighborhood, you will have an opportunity to see picturesque mansions in various architectural styles, some of which in recent years have been converted into boutique shops, restaurants and hotels.
  • Even though downtown San Jose is best explored on foot, the chaotic traffic makes it hard for tourists to get around. Pedestrians generally do not have the right of way, so you should be careful when crossing the street and always watch out for reckless cars and scooters.
  • The Costa Rican capital enjoys warm temperatures year-round, however, if you want to experience the city without worrying about rain, plan your visit during the dry season, which lasts from mid-December to April.
