Patagonia Travel and Tours in Chile: Highlights and Tips

85 reviews on bookmundi

Encompassing the southern tips of Chile and Argentina, Patagonia is literally at the end of the world and can safely be called one of the most astonishing places on earth. The stark scenery, comprising rugged mountains and sparkling lakes, is unlike anything you will have laid eyes on before. The Chilean Patagonia covers only one-third of the entire Patagonia region. A trip to Patagonia offers a lot more than just beautiful backdrops. This region is one of the few remaining examples of truly untouched wilderness. You don’t come here for the nightlife or for fancy restaurants. Patagonia is where people come to escape the world and you’ll understand why the second you get here.

A 'must do' trip that you'll never forget

Exploring the dramatic, captivating and beautiful Patagonian landscape in two short weeks. The weather ranged from windy, cold, to warm and sunny all in the same day. For those of you who are into photography you're in for a treat. Did I tell you about the wind?

Rugged, Pristine Beauty

This adventure was absolutely fantastic. The rugged carved landscape is spectacular and endless and each day greeted us with a new beauty. Fitzroy Base Camp & Torres del Paine hikes along with the optional hikes offered were great to get out and explore the area. Perito Moreno Glacier is absolutely breathtaking and it was hard to leave when the time came. An absolute must!

Great location, tour leader and weather - what more could you wish for!

Lived completely upto expectations, wonderful country. WE didn't experience any adverse weather conditions which made all the walks and hikes pleasurable. I've never eaten so much lovely steak and lamb, and the wine was fabulous and very well priced. The blues of the glaciers were stunning.

Stunning Landscapes

This trip was a great way to see the top highlights while leaving you wanting to explore more! Perfect 'Discovery' trip! There are a lot of flights and the airline can move around the timings so you have to be flexible and open to late nights/early starts. There really is no other way to cover so much distance in just 2 weeks. Its well worth the travel as you get to see 2 completely different sides of Chile, the Desert and Salt flats of the North and the Lakes and Mountains of the South, both equally beautiful but very different. The food wasn't as expensive as I thought, similar pricing to London restaurants so by no means cheap but not unaffordable and if you take some snacks with you its easy to skip lunches as dinner portions in every restaurant we went to are very generous. The hotels were clean, spacious and comfortable. The only pool in use (we were early in the season) was in San Pedro. Both optional excursions are well worth doing but I would recommend doing a little research into star constellations before going to help things make more sense as its a lot of information to take in. Our guide Miguel was very knowledgeable and clearly loves his country and the outdoors we were in good hands especially in the National parks as he knows the area well. He is also a keen photographer so we were going to great photo locations and he was always willing to stop the bus whenever wildlife or a good photo angle was spotted! There are long drives, but the scenery was so beautiful that the drives were just as special as the walks and plenty of stops to stretch our legs or take a photo or toilet stop.

Our guide was Magnifico! Jorge anticipated all our questions and patiently opened up the Patagonia landscape. Camp sites were clean and inviting. The food exceeded expectations. Our group bonded so well. It was a wonderful way to make new friends and share amazing fotos.

Patagonia Travel and Tours in Chile: Highlights and Tips

Tour Highlights

  • The main highlight of Patagonia tour is the endless trekking and hiking opportunities it provides. Torres del Paine National Park, where hikers can take on the 130km circuit and ogle at some outstanding landscapes, is one of the most popular attraction in Patagonia.
  • Walk around Punta Arenas and soak up its history. There are old mansions to look at and museums to explore here.
  • Hop in a boat, float around on the Grey Lake (Lago Grey) on the Chilean Patagonia, and check out the spectacular glaciers that pepper the water.
  • Go to Isla Magdalena and snap some photos of the adorable penguins that inhabit the island.
  • Sail around the infamous Cape Horn. Before the Panama Canal was built, Cape Horn was the gateway between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Sailors would have to brace themselves for fierce winds and rough seas as they made their way past these ominous black cliffs.
  • Tierra del Fuego in Patagonia is the gateway to Antarctica.

Travel Tips

  • The weather in Patagonia can be very unpredictable so make sure you pack for every eventuality. Expect heavy rain, powerful winds, blazing sunshine and maybe even snow.
  • Travel there between December and February for the best weather.
  • If you want to avoid the crowds and still have reasonable weather, travel in the months of November or April.
  • Those planning on taking on some of the more challenging treks should take trekking poles with them. This will make the experience a bit easier on your knees. For more information on suitable trekking gears, read our guide to equipments needed when trekking.
  • Sneakers aren’t enough – you really need to take hiking boots with you. There is a lot of mud here, which is complemented by sharp rocks. Running shoes don’t provide enough protection for your feet.
  • If you’re planning on camping at all, make sure your tent is Patagonia-proof. In other words, be sure it can withstand fast winds and that the tent poles won’t break.
  • You do not need a visa to visit Argentina from Chile if you are a tourist coming from Europe, the USA, Canada, New Zealand or Australia and you are planning on staying for less than 90 days. Simply take your passport with you to the border and you will be allowed to cross from Argentina into Chile for a small entrance fee.

Patagonia has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Patagonia before planning your Patagonia tour in Chile.
