The tour director and our driver were excellent. went beyond her day to day duties to make sure we enjoyed our excursion. The local guides brought the Gods back to life and made you remember what was taught to you (for some of us) many years ago. Greece was on my bucket list for many years and I really enjoyed it. I had an amazing and enjoyable experience discovering the highlights of Greece. There was a number of ancient sites/museums visited and the group learned so much from the amazing local specialists on this tour. This also gives you a chance to connect with the locals and see their family run businesses - such as a honey bee facility, olive farm and a clay pottery workshop. Our TD- is outstanding! She is by far, the best TD that I've met out of the 7 trips with Trafalgar. All the hotels we stayed in are cozy and clean. I love Divani Caravel in Athens for it's breakfast and location The view at Delphi hotel was beautiful. Just like any other tour - there's a lot of walking and a lot of them involved going uphill (Acropolis, Mycenae, Delphi and Meteora). It will also be good to book an extra night in Athens either before of after the tour. There are still some sights to see (up close) which are not part of the itinerary (only a drive by). The only downside of this tour for me was the day we visited 3 ancient sites. Quite challenging physically and mentally (info overload). Other than that, I had a great time discovering Greece on this tour.

My favorite experiences were the personalized extras our tour guide provided for us! We had a dance party and several extra guided tours that were not included in the tour! She made a point to spend time with everyone and kept the needs of each person in mind!! She is one of a kind for sure!

A great holiday, Athens is well worth a visit but doesn't need more than a couple of days to explore unless you intend to venture outside the city. Naxos is beautiful, particularly the inland towns included on the walking day. The only 'downer' on our holiday was a couple of people having their baggage stolen on a ferry!! Santorini is spectacular with some amazing views. The whole trip was excellently led as I've come to expect with Explore and lovely hotels throughout.

Our tour guide was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and fun! The tour was a perfect mix of structured activities and free time so we could explore on our own. I loved seeing and learning about all of the different historical sites. I feel that this tour was a must do on your bucket list!

What a tour! To get the bustling, vibrant, urban city of Athens with some of the best coffee and cocktails in the world... and then hop on a ferry and experience the splendor of the islands - is a truly best of both worlds travel experience. Our tour manager was a delight - the beauty and history was unparalleled.

Athens - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

    Travel Highlights

    • Nestled on an old citadel overlooking the Greek capital, Acropolis is the birthplace of democracy and the crown jewel of Athenian ancient sights. Acropolis’ most important architectural feat is the Parthenon, a magnificent temple that dates back to 5th century BC.
    • At the foot of Acropolis, you will find Plaka, a historic neighborhood characterized by quaint cobbles alleys, neoclassical architecture and old Roman-era ruins.
    • A quiet inner-city oasis, the National Garden spans 38 acres of luscious vegetation, as well as duck ponds and a small zoo.
    • Syntagma Square, a gorgeous plaza lined with shops, cafés and neoclassical mansions, represents the heart of the city and a central meeting point for all Athenians.

    Travel Tips

    • Any trip to Athens simply wouldn’t be complete without trying a bona fide Greek souvlaki. Best places to do so can be found along the Mitropoleos Street, where you can fill your belly like a true Greek god.
    • If you’re planning your visit to Athens during scorching summer months, you might want to refresh yourself by checking out one of the capital’s numerous beaches, such as Vouliagmeni and Cape Sounion.
    • Due to inflated prices and unbearably hot weather, you might want to plan your holidays in Athens outside of peak summer months (July and August). Spring, early summer and fall tend to be the most pleasant months for sightseeing, as there is still plenty of sunshine, but the temperatures tend to be more moderate.
    • The most efficient way to get around Athens is by using the metro. You can either purchase single journeys or an all-day ticket, which might be convenient if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing.
