Borneo, Asia’s largest island, is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Within its ancient tropical rainforests thrives an astonishingly rich array of wildlife, featuring unique species not found anywhere else such as orangutans, long-nosed monkeys, and pygmy elephants. On this 11-day biking tour across Sabah, a Malaysian state in northeastern Borneo, we set forth in pursuit of these frontiers of untamed wilderness. Beyond these wilds, we also discover Sabah’s hinterlands, highlands, mountains, and coast!
Beginning in Sabah’s capital city of Kota Kinabalu we fly east and cycle into Tabin Wildlife Reserve, a vast protected area teeming with life. Here we spend two nights at a jungle lodge and explore the surrounding forests by bike, hike & safari! We then continue onwards to the Kinabatangan River where we cruise on the meandering waterway, on the lookout for scenes of monkeys swinging in the trees and elephants coming to bathe. We then turn our attention fully to Borneo’s iconic primates, visiting a world-renowned orangutan rehabilitation center and a sanctuary for proboscis monkeys on the northern tip of Borneo. Our initial forays into the jungles are followed by a deeper exploration of rural Borneo. We cycle through extensive palm-oil plantations and rattle over dirt trails in tea fields before we reach Poring, known for its thermal hot springs and treetop walkway. From here we climb into the highlands and are greeted by the sight of majestic Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia’s tallest mountain. We cap off the tour with a ride to the western coast, treating ourselves to a stay at a lovely beach resort overlooking the South China Sea. The tour ends with a transfer back to Kota Kinabalu.
Join us in hitting the roads and trails of northern Borneo and discover a world at the edge of untamed wilderness!

Sarawak, a Malaysian state in northeastern Borneo, provides a vivid snapshot of the island’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Taking the state capital of Kuching as our launchpad, this 8-day cycling adventure traverses the surrounding hinterlands, wetlands, jungles, and beaches for a taste of what Asia’s largest island has to offer.
Meeting in Kuching, the tour begins with a warm-up ride through the city’s mosaic of riverside quarters, from British-colonial buildings to Chinese temples and Malay markets. We then dart off into the countryside, spending our days cycling along quiet back country roads that pass plantations, rainforests, rice fields, villages, and waterways. Off-saddle highlights include spending the night in a traditional Bidayuh longhouse village, kayaking on the Sarawak River and encountering orangutans at the world-renowned Semenggoh Nature Reserve. We also discover old-world charm in the small town of Siniawan and spend two nights at a resort on the picturesque Santubong Peninsula, an area where jungle-meets-ocean in dramatic fashion! The tour ends back in Kuching.

This road cycling odyssey takes you through a lesser-travelled region of Southeast Asia, immersing you in the vibrant and multicultural landscapes of southern Thailand and peninsular Malaysia. We ride into the backwaters of the Andaman Sea coast, wind through vast oil palm plantations, uncover heritage-infused towns, and ascend into lush, jungle-clad highlands. Along the way, we observe a cultural shift as the serene chants of Buddhist monks give way to the melodic call to prayer from Muslim mosques, while witnessing how centuries of trade, conquest and migration have shaped the lifestyles and cuisines of the Malay Peninsula.
Starting in Thailand’s Krabi Province, the first four days of our journey take us south to the Malaysian border. Highlights include peaceful rides through palm-studded countryside, a stay near the serene beach of Pak Meng, and a boat trip to a natural rock fortress rising from the ocean. After crossing into Malaysia, we pedal through the rice-rich plains and along the shores of the Straits of Malacca, arriving in George Town. Here, a rest day allows us to explore this UNESCO Heritage town, with its multi ethnic-blend of architecture and street food. The tour reaches its literal peak with an epic, leg-testing climb into the Cameron Highlands, offering stunning views of forested mountains and terraced tea plantations. Finally, we descend back into the lowlands and enter Malaysia’s bustling capital, Kuala Lumpur (KL, as the locals call it), through the backdoor, saddling off at the iconic Batu Caves. The tour ends in Kuala Lumpur.
