August sports excellent weather conditions in Croatia. The seafront city of Pula has sublime summer weather with temperatures between 18°C and 29°C. On the southern Dalmatian coast, the mercury rises slightly higher, between 23°C and 31°C. Temperatures in Dubrovnik in August are also hot at 23°C and 30°C. Zagreb, the country’s capital, is relatively colder, with the mercury hovering between 16°C and 28°C. The Dinaric Alps have the lowest temperatures in the whole of Croatia in August. In the mountain town of Gospic, the temperature ranges between 12°C and 27°C.

There are plenty of things to do in Croatia as August is still brimming with life in the heat of summer. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Sinjska Alka: This festival is over 300 years old and is held in Sinj. Visit Split and see the festival participants jousting with each other with lances on horseback in a true medieval fashion. It is like traveling back in time.
  • Dubrovnik Summer Festival: This is one of the biggest festivities in the Mediterranean with weeks-long theatrical and musical performances throughout the ancient city of Dubrovnik.
  • Krk Sunrise Festival: Krk hosts a Venetian-style fair where festival-goers are dressed in medieval costumes. Attending this festival is a great opportunity to try traditional food and learn about the place’s culture and history.
  • Zrće Beach Festival: Pag Island becomes home to the largest music festival of its kind in Europe in August. Come and enjoy the underground music performances, which are staged on boats and in jubilant open-air clubs.
  • Beach season: With plenty of sunshine, August is one of the best times to enjoy a Croatian beach holiday. Zlatni Rat in Brac is the most popular beach destination while Punta Rata in Brela is a secluded crystalline paradise, perfect for a peaceful day at the beach. Bacvice, Kastelet and Trstenik in Split also have some of the best beaches.

The country has hundreds of islands that host parties, festivals and a slew of outdoor activities. Dugi Otok hosts the annual Sali Fiesta, which is popular for its live music and traditional food. The festival also features a donkey race and a candlelit boat procession. In the northern village of Labin, artists open the doors to their studios in the summer, welcoming visitors in to come and see them at work.

Most visitors head to the Adriatic Coast in August, leaving the capital of Zagreb less busy than usual.
