The trip was very smooth. All the connections and handling of our luggage was taken care of. Five stars for the coordination that our guide, handled was perfect. We saw attractions that most tours would miss.

For the adventurer who loves a challenging trek

This trip had a great mix of trekking and learning about Peruvian culture and Inca history. The views were incredible and there are so many Inca sites along the way. The food was an absolute standout!

Excellent adventure, our local leader Olmer was absolutely fantastic, all was on time , well organised and the whole team was very supportive. One of participants forgot the raincoat during the lunch in restaurant and Onlmer with his team found it and brought back to the hotel in Cusco . The itinerary is brilliant , gives the taste of real life in Peru. During the Inca trail camping, the team went above and beyond, tents were set up always on time, food was delicious and we never had the same meal, every day something different. Highly recommended **

This tour was another excellent experience with Explore. Darwin, our leader, was superb and always went the extra mile to help with everything. He was amongst the best tour leaders we have experienced. The tour provided a very good introduction to the main attractions of the more visited parts of Peru. Highlights for us were Machu Pichu (of course) and the Uros and Taquile islands on Lake Titicaca, with the boat trip to get there. The whole tour was spent at high altitudes. This should be borne in mind by anyone who has any concerns about their ability to tolerate thin air and a dry atmosphere for long periods. The payoff for this though was superb views of the Andes every day! As we have come to expect with Explore tours, the accommodation quality was a bit variable. The Taquile Guesthouse was actually rather better than we expected, given the previous negative reviews that we had read. Yes, it was quite basic, but it was definitely worth it to experience the rustic way of life of the island, the hosts were very friendly and the welcome a warm one. The accommodation elsewhere on the tour was generally quite comfortable, although our hotel room at Arequipa was a little too noisy. A small point, but we would suggest that the visits from Ollantaytambo to the Maras salt mines and Moray Inca terraces should be included in the itinerary rather than being an optional extra. Everyone on our tour booked for this option rather than the alternatives of kayaking/paddle boarding (expensive and probably in rather cold water) and a craft brewery visit (something you can easily do in the UK, so not a particularly Peruvian experience). Overall, the tour comes highly recommended by us.

Spectacular challenging trekking and amazing food!

This trip provides a fantastic combination of challenging remote trekking on the Salkantay section and over the Inca Chiriasca pass, the traditional Inca Trail with amazing site of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate, plus many fascinating Inca sites which were brought to life by our exceptional and knowledgeable leader, Edwind. The food on the trek was superb - big shout out to our amazing chefs - plus meals out in Cusco were a revelation, with beautifully presented, tasty options.

During this period, both countries experience clear weather conditions and mild temperatures, ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and sightseeing. Bolivia and Peru Travel Tips

  • Take some time to acclimatize before exploring high-altitude destinations such as La Paz and Cusco. A good idea is to spend a few days in low-altitude cities such as Arequipa or Sucre. Also, ensure adequate hydration, abstain from alcohol and, if necessary, consult a health professional to obtain medication against mountain sickness.
  • Opt for local modes of transportation like micros (minibusses) in Bolivia and colectivos (shared vans) in Peru for a more authentic and cost-effective travel experience.
  • Plan your visit during the shoulder seasons (April–May or September–October) to avoid crowds and enjoy lower rates, especially if you want to visit popular sites such as Machu Picchu or Tiwanaku. Another useful tip is to aim for early morning or late afternoon entry to avoid the influx of tourists and savor quieter moments among the ancient ruins.
  • Consider booking escorted tours to Peru and Bolivia, as they will allow you to interact with locals, sample regional specialties, and participate in traditional activities, thus ensuring a more immersive and authentic travel experience.
  • Make sure to only drink bottled or boiled water during your tours of Bolivia and Peru to avoid gastrointestinal issues, and opt for cooked or peeled fruits and vegetables to minimize the risk of contamination, which is quite common, especially in rural villages in the Andes.
