Egypt Budget Travel Tips
Use Uber or Careem instead of negotiating airport taxis
Taxi negotiation is where many first-time Egypt budgets start bleeding. In Cairo and Giza, ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem can make short city transfers more predictable. They are not perfect in every situation, but they usually beat starting every journey with a pavement debate. For airport transfers, check whether your tour already includes pickup before paying twice.
Eat koshary, ful and falafel where locals eat
Egypt is one of the easiest countries for cheap filling meals. Koshary, ful, taameya, shawarma, bakeries and local grills can keep food costs low without making the trip feel deprived. Hotel restaurants and tourist-zone set menus cost more and are often less memorable. Save restaurant spending for one good meal in Cairo, Luxor or Aswan rather than defaulting to tourist menus.
Check whether the Cairo or Luxor Pass actually pays off
The Cairo Pass and Luxor Pass can be useful for travelers visiting many paid sites in a short time, but they are not automatically a bargain. Add up the sites you will realistically visit. If the plan includes only the Pyramids, one museum and a few temples, individual tickets may be better. Passes work best for archaeology-heavy travelers with packed sightseeing days.
Budget tips before arrival
Tipping is part of Egypt travel, especially for guides, drivers, cruise staff, porters and service workers. Treat it as a real budget line, not spare change discovered at the end of the trip. Ask the operator for tipping guidance before arrival. This avoids awkward moments and helps travelers compare packages more honestly, because a low tour price may still require cash tips.
Avoid alcohol-heavy Nile cruise spending
A Nile cruise can be good value, but onboard extras can quietly raise the bill. Alcohol, specialty drinks, laundry, optional shows and extra excursions are often not included. If the budget is tight, drink water, keep extras limited and confirm what meals are included before boarding. Cruise cabins may be prepaid; the onboard bill is where surprises gather.
Use a guided package for Cairo–Luxor–Aswan if short on time
DIY Egypt can work, especially for experienced travelers, but short trips are different. Cairo, Luxor and Aswan involve airport transfers, train or flight choices, temple timing, guide decisions and hotel logistics. A guided package can reduce the hassle tax and help travelers avoid losing time to bad transfers, weak guides or unclear ticket rules.

Reviews of our Egypt Budget Tours
Our budget travelers found great value exploring Egypt — see their reviews.
Excellent trip even though it was only 3 days we seen and done so much in those days. It was enough for anyone short on time in Cairo and wants to cram as much in as they can.
I am very glad I added on this mini adventure to my main tour in Egypt! Our CEO, Aziza, was incredible and I absolutely loved all of the activities. The catacombs and monastery we visited were particularly incredible. I am so glad G Adventures offers this mini tour!
We really enjoyed our recent King Ramses Tour of Egypt. Great guide (Nashat), good hotels, enjoyable Nile River cruise and awesome sights and history made for a wonderful experience. Longer-than-preferred bus travel between cities, and the overnight train travel between Cairo and Aswan was less than desirable, but OTG was up front and realistic in setting expectations in advance of the trip. We knew what we could expect; thereby no surprises.
The communication is very well, everyone spoke excellent English and everything went smoothy. All service, guides, drivers, itinerary, meals, airport transfer were excellent. Trip was above expectations. Everything went well, we found the three guides Abeer, Saad and Bassim exceptionally good. Very well organized tour, thank you!
Under Sam's expert guidance we visited all famous temples, tombs and museums, had much fun on the felucca, went snorkelling at Dahab's Blue Hole and climbed up Moses Mountain. One of the best short tours I have done and great value for money!
The King Ramses tour was the by far the best tour that I have been on. It was amazing!! The guide was very knowledgeable. The tour takes you to so many pyramids and tombs!! I was extremely impressed!
