Itinerary

Step into outback Queensland’s living history with the Gulf Savannah Wanderer—an immersive sightseeing trip curated for experienced travelers. Over nine days, this tour package loops from Cairns through timeworn villages, dramatic gorges, and prehistoric natural marvels, including the legendary Undara Lava Tubes and Cobbold Gorge.

Winding through Chillagoe, Georgetown, and beyond, you’ll ride classic trains, wander colonial-era townships, and encounter monuments that tell the tales of pioneering explorers. The itinerary balances cultural depth with geological wonder, transporting you from the echoes of early settlement to landscapes shaped over millennia.

The USP here is its seamless blend of heritage and natural spectacle—where ancient lava tunnels and red-earthed savannahs become the backdrop for a journey into Australia’s rugged heart. Accommodation, meals, and transport are all arranged, letting you focus on soaking up the sights and stories of the Gulf Savannah.

Accommodation was on par with other remote tours I've done. Driver/ tour guide was excellent, very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. Karumba boat ride was very ordinary but the sunset was spectacular, certainly lived up to its reputation. Gulflander and Savannah lander train rides were enjoyable. Undara accommodation in train carriages was a nice touch. Overall a great trip.

Truly wonderful trip. Cruising down the Norman River into the Gulf & also Cobbold Gorge. Train travel on both Savannahlander and Gulflander. Staying in train carriages for accommodation and viewing the lava tubes. This trip was so well organised by our fantastic driver Andrea who went out of his way to keep everyone happy. Don’t miss this great experience.

We enjoyed all the types of accommodation we had, although felt segregated as part of the group at Normanton when our accommodation wasn't with the rest of the group and felt like it was a shipping container. Other than that was fabulous and was what we had hoped for.
