day 1Join trip in Kathmandu
Our tour starts today in Kathmandu; the busy, colourful and chaotic capital city of Nepal. Centuries of history are evident in shrines, hidden temples and narrow backstreets, and the Himalayas provide a spectacular backdrop to this intoxicating city.
Our hotel in Kathmandu is around a 30-minute drive from the airport. For those arriving on time, our tour leader will meet you in the hotel reception at 5pm for a welcome meeting. After this, for those who wish, there is the chance to go out for dinner. Should you miss the meeting, our tour leader will leave you information giving the meeting time for the next day in the hotel reception and will inform you of any essential information as soon as you catch up.
There are no activities planned today, so you're free to arrive in Kathmandu at any time. If you'd like an airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive into Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM).
If your flight arrives earlier in the day, you might choose to walk into the centre of town which is around 15 minutes from the hotel.
This evening you might like to have your first taste of Nepalese cuisine. The local dumplings are a good bet - called momos, they consist of a flour-based dough filled with meat or steamed vegetables. Also worth trying is dal bhat, a lentil-based soup usually served with rice and vegetable curry. Whatever you try, you'll find the cuisine varied, a mixture of influences from around the region, and a riot of colours and flavours.

Although the itinerary was excellent it was somewhat marred by road conditions - slow progress through roadworks and excessive dust. We had the same driver for the whole tour and he was excellent. Our guide was generally very good but sometimes things did get lost in translation. It wasn’t listed in the itinerary but 3 of us did the brewery tour which was a short walk from the Riverside Resort. The beer and the tour were excellent Bandipur was a total delight even though it was very cold.
Our 15 day trip to Nepal in November met all our expectations. The group of 16 was led by Su, who was not only caring and attentive but knowledgable on every aspect of his country. The trip was full on and involved city walks as well as peaceful treks through the countryside and hilltop pretty villages with spectacular views of the Himalayas. Su ensured we had the opportunity of seeing beautiful sunsets and regularly gave us the option of rising early to enjoy the sunset from the rooftop of our accommodation. Visiting Chitwan National Park was a highlight at the end of our trip where we saw one-horned rhinos, elephants as well as other animals and birds. The bus journeys were comfortable and restful as we passed through villages and saw day to day life of the local people. We made regular stops for bathroom breaks, coffee or just stretch our legs. I would thoroughly recommend this trip for those with a moderate to good level of fitness who would like to enjoy all aspects of Nepal.
This was a first class trip with a great range of activities. There were plenty of guided things to get involved with - treks, white water rafting, city tours, wild life safaris. These were well balanced with free time for people to pursue their own interests. The thing which made the trip exceptional was Su the tour leader. His kindness, attention to detail and catering for everyone's needs was outstanding - often dealing with potential difficulties before they arose. Su was also well supported by the two drivers who always went beyond their duties. The team were real ambassadors for Nepal and Explore.
Best explore trip ever, with best guide ever. The mix of activity and visits could not have been better balanced. Full on without being exhausting. I personally would have liked more time at the mountain museum but appreciate others might not. Our guide, Udaya, did his utmost to accommodate those that found the walking a challenge, (even though the trip notes clearly described what to expect). Udaya’s knowledge, enthusiasm and clear love of his country enhanced the trip, even on the long bus journeys there was regular commentary on what we were seeing and short stops of interest. He had concern for our welfare and even joined in with us in a hotel Christmas cake mixing competition after our trip had officially ended. This whole experience will take some beating.
A superb trip which gave an excellent insight into the culture, peoples and landscapes of Nepal. The trip was excellently guided by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable leader. The experiences were varied and included a number of purpiseful walks taking us through villages and scenes with exceptional views.
