Enjoy Bulgaria’s most picturesque alpine treks and climb the Balkans’ tallest summits, Musala (2925 m) and Vihren (2914 m), during this eight-day trip. Our route crosses huge national parks with broad alpine meadows and serrated summits, glacier lakes and stone rivers. Encounter rare plant and animal life as you take in this incredible mountain scenery. The program includes a visit to the Rila Monastery, listed by UNESCO and one of Bulgaria’s best-known sights.

The walking treks are arduous and suited to very fit people experienced in alpine walking. The hiking program is based from two main centers (one each in the Pirin and the Rila), allowing the routes to be additionally adapted to group specifics, and to be undertaken with only a small backpack with a days’ supply of water, food, and clothing.

One of the best hiking tours I have been to!
“The tour organization of Traventuria was impeccable. From the first email I sent, to the airport transfer on our last day. The guide Alex was top! The whole tour is very well thought in terms of difficulty, landscapes and overall planning. Weather conditions were superb and we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. All accommodations were clean and comfortable. Food was great. I can only recommend this particular trek and the company who stands behind it - Traventuria.”

Fantastic trip!
“We went on this tour by recommendation of friends who had previously visited Bulgaria and this same tour with Traventuria. Having been already on a few such hikes in the Alps and the Pyrenees we wanted to experience something different. And we got it! Stunning mountains, combined with perfect organization, very good accommodations and local food. Very good physical condition is a must if you wish to fully enjoy the hikes. But scenery has been rewarding throughout. We were lucky to be there when summer starts and meadows were filled with a variety of flowers, blooming right after the winter. Our guide even showed us a herd of mountain goats at the foot of Vihren. The program is designed in the best possible way. We had a day off with less activities, which was meant to provide more time for relax between the hikes in Rila and Pirin. And we made use of it by visiting one of the most famous tourist attractions in the country - the UNESCO heritage listed Rila Monastery. Overall great experience and highly recommended tour!”

Once in a lifetime experience!
“What a great tour we had with Traventuria! When people think of a hike somewhere higher in Europe, they immediately think of the Alps. Well, the "Balkans Alps" are not at all less scenic. Pirin and Rila and stunning mountain ranges, full of peaks exceeding 2000m. We never got bored of summits and glacial lakes, which were following one after the other as we traced some of the most picturesque trails of these mountains. I particularly enjoyed the climb of Mt. Vihren in Pirin, which was nothing but stunning! This tour is perfect for active hikers, who wish to explore a less different region of Europe, but exceeding (IMO) many of the other popular trekking destinations. The ground logistics were perfect. The guide Nadya did a great job keeping us together and explaining everything we wanted to hear. Transfers were perfectly organized as well. The small hotels and pensions we used to stay overnight were comfortable and clean and the food we were served (especially when it was our guide's choice of the menu) were very tasty. Excellent tour, excellent tour organizer Traventuria!”

Beautiful hiking in Bulgaria
“This was a well organized and high quality trip. We stayed in small family run hotels and were taken up to the mountains for the walks. The walks were well planned so that the 6 days walking was well balanced, with a more restful day on day 4. The guide was excellent and he set an ideal pace for the group. The walks were demanding as stated in the brochure, and definitely required skills and experience in high mountain walking, but the rewards were fantastic views and a sense of great achievement in climbing so many high peaks. It was a wonderful week and one of my best trips ever Our guide Mitko was outstanding. I truly give this tour 5 stars.”

Other Practical InformationThe trek is arduous and suited to very fit people experienced in alpine walking. There are sufficient alternative walking routes in case of bad weather. The best period for this trip is mid June to mid September The hiking time only is mentioned on each day (not including stops for pictures, picnics, breaks etc.!); these are based on an average hiker’s speed of 45km/hr on flat terrain, additional 30min for each 300m elevation gain, and a backpack weighing not more than 1015% of your body weight. Still, this varies a lot on the terrain, the group size and the hiking experience of each client within the group. Meeting details: For all international group tours you need to plan on landing in Sofia before 15:00 on the tour starting date and leave after 11:00 on the last tour date (otherwise extra fees for private transfers may apply).
