Begin in Yogyakarta, Java’s cultural capital, where royal palaces and artist workshops preserve centuries of Javanese tradition. Here, explore Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 9th century. Carved from volcanic stone, its nine terraces are designed to represent the path to enlightenment.
Travel east by scenic train to Malang, gateway to Java’s highlands, where fertile volcanic soil support plantations of tea, coffee, and clove. From here, spend three days trekking through mountain forests of pine, acacia and casuarina, and farmland where villagers cultivate vegetables, potatoes and corn on the fertile slopes.
