We'll make our way to the magnificent Kong Lor cave where we'll take a tiny boat and follow the river through the 8-kilometer cave through the mountain, before continuing on to Vientiane Capital.
The tour route is Luang Prabang - Phonsavanh - Kong Lor - Vientiane. Please see the itinerary and what’s included sections for more details of this fantastic tour!
Beautiful and well-planned holiday with activities that both parents and children enjoyed. The tour guide was excellent with the children; he went above and above to give us detailed information about his home country, his family, what it's like to grow up there. We felt so welcomed there.
This tour will serve different activities based on 2 different seasons: high water season and low water season. It will be much more fun and exciting during the high water season when the waterfall is flowing, but dirty roads can be more challenging. So it depends on your preferences to choose the one that best suits you.
Here are the details for each season:
High water season (August to January):
At the departure time around 8 am, you will be greeted and picked up at your hotel’s lobby in Luang Prabang. You are then transferred to the Nam Khan River.
Once you arrive there, you will embark on a boat to cruise to the Tad Sae Waterfall which flows directly to Nam Khan River. Coming to this waterfall, you can enjoy not only the fantastic beauty of it but also go swimming in this natural pool. This waterfall is also a popular destination for elephants, so you can see real elephants there and take photos of them.
After relaxing with a refresh swim, you will get on the boat again to head towards our kayaking location where you will be equipped with safety gear to start your kayaking journey through stunning panoramic views of green jungle mountains and Lao life.
You will stop to have lunch, and then continue paddling. It will be very exciting when you kayak through sections of rapids. This journey will take you approximately 3-4 hours to finish the 20km (12 miles) kayaking. However, the time it takes will depend on your kayaking ability. In case you are really good at kayaking, you can have an extension for even longer kayaking from Ban En (25 km).
Low water season (February to July):
A full-day kayaking trip is not available during the dry season due to low water levels and impassible sections. Tad Sae Waterfall is low or dry from February to August. You can consider a half-day kayak option for this season. Please check with us for details.
The trip ends around 5 pm at your hotel.
If you spend a few days in Luang Prabang I really recommend you organize tours with them. They promote a truly beautiful idea of sustainable tourism, supporting the local population, and the activities are very well organized. They are a big family always ready to help.
Discover classic Laos on this 10-day guided tour. Start in the UNESCO heritage ancient royal capital Luang Prabang and travel through Phonsavanh to Vang Vieng to the final destination of Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
In Luang Prabang, visit famous temples that are still used in daily Lao life, experience a boat trip on the mighty Mekong River to the mysterious Pak Ou cave and see other highlights such as stunning waterfalls and a living farm.
Xieng Khouang, the next stop, is best-known for having been heavily bombed during the Indochina War and also for the historic Plain of Jars. In Vang Vieng, visit nearby villages, populated by the Hmong hill tribe and Tai Dam people, who live a simple life but possess a vibrant local culture and an interesting history.
Continue to Vientiane and stop to visit an archaeological site of Vang Xang, where you can admire one of the country’s oldest Buddha statues, dating back to the 11th century.
All accommodation, transport and activities are included on this tour, as well as several meals. Check out the what’s included sections and the detailed itinerary for more information.
PRIVATE TOUR: Take in the very best of Laos on this private 8 day tour. Travelling from enchanting Luang Prabang and the picturesque Khouang Si waterfall in the north, to Pakse and the beautiful 4000 Islands in the south. Taking in the charming laid-back capital of Vientiane en route.
A region endowed with immense natural beauty and an ancient past, Luang Prabang is best seen through a local's eyes. Interested in exploring this area? Then we have the perfect tour for you.
Meet your tour guide at our sales office early in the morning for a forty-minute drive to Pak Ou Village where you are free to explore the many crafts that the locals make before crossing the mighty Mekong River by a small boat to the base of a limestone cliff, the site of the Pak Ou Caves. Take your time to explore the impressive lower grottos filled with Buddhist statues and scented with burning incense. Grab a flashlight and head up through a winding series of stairs to find another fascinating and easily navigable cave filled with ancient Buddhist relics.
Enjoy your lunch before crossing the Mekong again by boat and continue with a drive downriver for one and a half hours to the famous Kuang Si Waterfall. On the way, we’ll stop to see the popular Whiskey Village where you have the option to sample the locally made Lao Lao.
The jungle around the waterfall remains lush and beautiful year-round. The waterfall cycles between placid, turquoise waters during the dry season to impressive, roaring falls during the rainy season. Either way, you’re in for a refreshing and beautiful nature experience. Integrated into the landscape is an Asiatic bear sanctuary where you can see these beautiful creatures up close and support efforts to care for the animals in the area.
We’ll end this full-day trip with a return drive to Luang Prabang late in the afternoon.
Please note that the stairs in the lower Pak Ou Cave are short but steep. Access to the upper cave is via a fairly long series of stairs and can be taken at your own pace.
The Pak Ou Cave and Kuang Si Waterfall lie to the north and south of Luang Prabang city, respectively. This tour will take you to both these highlights, with a scenic drive up and down the length of the Mekong River between.
My wife and I truly enjoyed this incredible tour. The 3-star hotels exceeded our expectations, not only in comfort, but also in location, allowing us to easily explore local life. Every pickup was seamless. The tours themselves were well-organized and each experience was memorable. Honestly, our only regret is not having more time in each of these amazing places!
A special thanks to our dedicated rep, Evelyn, who supported us throughout the trip. This was a 5/5 experience, and we’ll absolutely be recommending it to family, friends, and colleagues!
Take an exciting journey through Indochina. Discover enchanting Laos with its Buddhist temples and beautiful scenery, uncover the highlights of Vietnam such as Halong Bay, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong before travelling to the captivating kingdom of Cambodia, to explore iconic Angkor Wat.
Very good trip. In Siam Riep, it would have been good to have some free time and maybe some trips other than to temples (e.g. land mine rats). Otherwise, a very good trip overall.

Our family had a wonderful 2-weeks trip through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia. My husband and I loved exploring history and culture of destinations, my kids enjoyed learning to cook Vietnamese meals. Everything was well organized and we had a great time in Southeast Asia.
