Beginning in Kuching, we explore Sarawak’s colonial past and Indigenous heritage before travelling deep into the forest by longboat to stay at the remote Nanga Sumpa longhouse. Here, we spend time with the Iban people and venture out on foot in search of orangutans, macaques and hornbills in their natural habitat. We continue upriver to jungle camps, swim in waterfalls and walk trails few others will ever access.
Next, we fly to Mulu National Park - home to one of the world’s largest cave systems and the dramatic limestone Pinnacles of Gunung Api. Trekking through pristine rainforest, we climb to a viewpoint overlooking these 45-metre (148-foot) high stone spires, rising sharply from the jungle below.
In Sabah, we ascend Mount Kinabalu (4095m/13,435ft), Borneo’s highest peak, trekking through ever-changing ecological zones — from lowland forest to alpine scrub - to witness sunrise above the clouds. The journey concludes on the Kinabatangan River, where dawn and dusk wildlife cruises offer sightings of proboscis monkeys, elephants and rare birdlife, all within one of Southeast Asia’s most biodiverse ecosystems.

Sarawak, a Malaysian state in northeastern Borneo, provides a vivid snapshot of the island’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Taking the state capital of Kuching as our launchpad, this 8-day cycling adventure traverses the surrounding hinterlands, wetlands, jungles, and beaches for a taste of what Asia’s largest island has to offer.
Meeting in Kuching, the tour begins with a warm-up ride through the city’s mosaic of riverside quarters, from British-colonial buildings to Chinese temples and Malay markets. We then dart off into the countryside, spending our days cycling along quiet back country roads that pass plantations, rainforests, rice fields, villages, and waterways. Off-saddle highlights include spending the night in a traditional Bidayuh longhouse village, kayaking on the Sarawak River and encountering orangutans at the world-renowned Semenggoh Nature Reserve. We also discover old-world charm in the small town of Siniawan and spend two nights at a resort on the picturesque Santubong Peninsula, an area where jungle-meets-ocean in dramatic fashion! We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. We did see a lot of wildlife, though not as much as expected given the advertising for what we would see (we understand this is nature, but Borneo has definitely suffered from the palm oil plantations, the lack of birdlife was evident). The trip notes need updating - the Malaysian Rhino is extinct. Some improvement suggestions is that the tour group was too big (we had 15) for the types of activities and level of fitness needed. One less night in Kuching and instead have a night in Baku National Park would have been better. The park doesn't open til 8-9am so we missed seeing a lot of wildlife at dawn as by the time we got there it was already hot and sunny. It would have been good to know that we were changing guides half way through the tour. We found out it's because they can't work in the other state of Malaysia, (Sarawak and Sabah need different visas) but it would have been nice to know before the trip. If there was a way we could keep the same guide that would be ideal. At least if the first guide had even experienced the whole trip end to end so he could talk about what the second leg involved would have been beneficial. Other than that, we loved the holiday and the accommodation and meals were all of a high standard.
