On the whole a great itinerary. I would drop the Sunderbans though, since the chance of seeing any wildlife while sailing for hours up and down the middle of the river is unlikely, especially since the animals are behind a fence. We had an excellent tour leader, Kiran who is warm, very informed and energetic and who certainly went that extra mile in solving problems and caring for everyone. The local guides who travelled with us were also great, as were the drivers. The hotels in India were the Summit hotels, an Indian chain. They are clean and quite well organised. However since those in Sikkim were out of town we were forced to eat dinner in the hotels which produced the identical menu. It would have been better to have spent the bits of free time we had in Sikkim in the towns themselves.
Complex and beguiling, India is a country unlike any other. Wondrous sights rich in romance and intrigue come alive in the “Golden Triangle”—Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra. Delhi’s immense red sandstone marble tomb, commissioned by Emperor Humayun’s grief-stricken wife, will capture your heart, while Raj Ghat, a black granite memorial to the “Father of the Nation,” Mahatma Gandhi, will stir your soul. Jaipur’s Pink City and Agra’s Taj Mahal, a grand tribute to love, will leave you forever mesmerized.
Start your trip with five luxurious nights at three different award-winning Oberoi hotels. Enjoy a rare opportunity to see the Taj Mahal two times—once at sunrise and once at sunset. Once onboard, travel to villages lining the Ganges River that only a few people get to see each year and experience our new Wellness Program, centered around the destination’s ancient tradition and practice of yoga.
For those drawn to the spiritual pulse and vibrant life of India, the "Cruise on the Ganges: The Sacred Waters between Kolkata and Varanasi (port-to-port cruise)" delivers an unforgettable 10-day voyage. Starting in Kolkata and concluding in New Delhi, this luxury river cruise carries you through Varanasi, Kolkata, Matiari, and five other distinctive locations, offering an immersive tour package that reveals the country’s deep-rooted traditions and breathtaking landscapes.
The Ganges is far more than a river—it is a living symbol of India’s soul, revered by millions and central to daily rituals and spiritual renewal. Along this route, you’ll witness the authentic rhythms of local life, observe sacred ceremonies, and explore regions seldom touched by mass tourism. From the vibrant streets and colonial grandeur of Kolkata to the spiritual heart of Varanasi—where pilgrims gather in the early morning mist for ritual bathing—you’ll encounter a side of India that is both ancient and astonishingly alive.
Your stay aboard a luxury ship, outfitted with elegant canopy-style beds, adds an extra layer of comfort and exclusivity to the journey. Days are spent visiting remarkable historical sites, lush riverbanks, and bustling communities, while evenings invite you to relax and absorb the ambiance of this sacred waterway. This trip is a rare chance to experience India’s diverse culture and spiritual heritage in unparalleled style and ease.
The standout feature of this tour is its access to authentic, less-traveled regions of the Ganges, offering genuine cultural encounters and a deeper connection to the traditions that shape this remarkable country.
