Armine and Alex were both super guides. Alex’s love of history shone through and her management of our safety during a (minor) hotel fire was exemplary. The itinerary was great. The only itinerary change worth considering is at Gudauri when we had an early finish and there is not much to do locally to fill the gap. Hotels were of the standard I would expect from Explore with a mixture of types, using local hotels and expectations well managed when staying in simple accommodation. Ani Plaza Hotel in Yerevan was very well located. The hotel in Dilijan had been changed to a new resort hotel which has very comfortable beds and spacious rooms but it has a very clinical and impersonal decor, slightly odd bathroom layout and the meals were reminiscent of a school canteen. It was absolutely fine for one night. The food was generally excellent with standout meals being the included dinner in Kutaisi and the final lunch together. The wines were superb. I used less cash than I expected as cards were widely accepted. I would thoroughly recommend this trip to others.
A fantastic tour. Both Armenia and Georgia were superb destinations. They each had fascinating histories, outstanding food and wine and the most beautiful churches and landscapes. Both legs of the tour were really enhanced by the encyclopaedic knowledge of the guides, Armine in Armenia and Alex in Georgia. We would strongly recommend this tour.
The tour was as described, lots of churches and monasteries and long bus rides, but all the sights were very interesting and the overall experience was wonderful. Would have liked to spend more time at Vardzia and Batumi. I learned a lot about the ancient, recent and current history of this region thanks to the two excellent guides, Laura and Alex.
Our leaders Armena and Alex were both excellent. They had a great knowledge of the countries and their history. The meals and wine=tasting with local families was also most enjoyable.
I loved every minute of my time in these incredible countries. The history, the scenery, food and wine was amazing. The Explore tour leaders in both Armenia (Roza) and Georgia (Alex) were superb, so knowledgeable and passionate about their countries and ensured everything worked smoothly. I loved the mix of historical sites, foodie experiences and walking tours, whether in towns or in the countryside. The itinerary is busy, as the trip notes said, so well prepared and really felt it was great value for money. I would highly recommend this trip to others and clients (I am a travel agent). Could easily go back to Georgia just for the food !
Don't wait to visit Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Now is the time. This very interesting and thorough tour covering a large geographical area gives an in-depth experience into each of these three former Soviet republics. In Armenia, one travels from Yerevan in the centre, then south, back to Lake Sevan and on to the north to the cross the border. In Georgia, from Tbilisi, one radiates out from the capital to the North, West, East and South. In Azerbaijan, which is only for two days only Baku and a small area around can be covered. The only downside was a lot of coach travel albeit extremely comfortable as we had a 51 seater for 14 of us! I loved Armenia the best with Yerevan and its lovely Republic square, the brown dry barren scenic hills to the south, the vast expanse of Lake Sevan and the complete change of scenery to the north where it was green trees and UK type countryside. For me this trip, semi-completed a journey started three years ago. As in 2016, I visited the Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Then in 2017, three of the five Stans - Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. And finally this trip. It is so interesting being able to look back and reflect on the difference between these countries, each one of which appears to be at a different developmental stage. What I notice the most having visited all nine, is the effect of their geographical location, the West to East/Europe to Asia influence on their individual progress, along with their proximity to their friendly or not-so-friendly neighbours. I would definitely recommend visiting these three and some of the other former Soviet republics as the more you see the more one starts to understand their history.
