The Sierra de Aitana trek more than lived up to expectations. The scenery was magnificent and the walking was challenging enough to feel like an achievement each day, but manageable enough to be great fun.
An excellent week of hiking, led by José. About 1,000m of ascent on most days, so you need to be reasonably fit - but the views are most definitely worth the climb. The hotel is simple but perfectly ok - and the food prepared by Raquel was tasty. It's a small hotel, so the exodus party takes over the whole hotel which is helpful when doing evening briefings. The weather in March was cool (c15C max most days) which was ideal for hiking.
The trip was extraordinary and I will never forget it, mostly because of our amazing skipper and the people we met on the boat. Every person was mature and adventurous in the same way Jason and I are. Our conversations during dinners and sailing time were rich with politics, books, travel, culture and more -- and Kristien our skipper facilitated our group's comradery every step of the way. I learned a ton about sailing and the local islands, and I also felt like I relaxed and received the exact amount of exerise and adventure that I had wanted. Now I'm watching the G Adventures website like a hawk, and I've sent the website to a bunch of my friends who have asked about my Facebook photos!!!! Where to next?
Initially the distance between night stops looked like it was going to be an issue but the great roads and new bus made the miles disappear (helped by having very good drivers). The hotels were better than I expected, clean, modern and generally comfortable. Antonio, the tour leader, was exceptional. He was good humoured, always helpful and there to resolve the inevitable minor problems. Overall a great value tour, run professionally.
This trip was scheduled at the start of Covid. After three years, I finally made it. The tour guide, Antonio, was also scheduled for that trip. It was a great adventure.
Let me start by stating that Marysol Blaumann is an absolute treasure as a tour guide! My wife and I have taken many guided trips to many countries and continents. This trip was our second with Expat, and it seems us like the quality of the tour guides at Expat is very high. It may not seem like 15 days is a terribly long time, but without a capable and entertaining guide/leader it can seem so much longer. Marysol kept us excited and motivated to see the next city or place to visit throughout the trip by describing it in advance as ""my favorite place in Spain or Portugal"". Granted, by the 14th day we took this exclamation with a grain of salt, but she kept us informed of our itinerary and schedule multiple times each day, and most importantly, she explained why it was important that we keep to the schedule. Rarely did we fall behind schedule. The sites, experiences and local tour guides in Spain and Portugal certainly played their part in making this a memorable trip. I don't think we had a single day of rain during the whole trip and while we might have wished for generally warmer weather; you really need to be careful when you ask for warm weather in Spain and Portugal! We were grateful for the weather we got. It would take too long to comment on even a small number of the great places we visited. Granada and the Alhambra were incredible, but so was Savilla, and Valencia, and Barcelona, Lisbon, and Pamplona, and...
