This trip is so well organised. I did not have to worry about anything. This was a big plus for me as a solo traveller. Guides were on time and very knowledgeable.
The itinerary covered a large area of Guatemala and consequently there were some very long travel days, arriving at our hotels quite late, however, whilst this was knowingly signed up to, it was good to stay 2 nights at most places but there was very little free time. Some places that were on the itinerary could have been left out eg the Candelaria Caves, which clearly was used as a stopping point on another long driving day to Coban. The country is colourful and the people are friendly, the colonial architecture was a feast as well as the amazing Mayan sites both in Honduras as well as Guatemala. We were very disappointed not to visit the final Mayan site, Iximche which was closed, presumably as it was November 1st, but it meant we had longer in Sumpango, where we could watch attempts to get the larger kites into the sky... the last one was still flying when we left, a clear winner. Another unexpected bonus was a festival in Antigua (Nov 2nd) which took the whole day to complete around the town, not fully explained by our guide, but after a check out with Google it is called the Procession of the School of Christ, which celebrated 76 years in 2025, so extra special. We managed to stay well clear of any illness for the duration of the trip, unlike a small minority of the group, however if you are a seasoned traveller I would definitely recommend this tour ;)
A very beautiful country with stunning rain forests and volcanic formations. Maya culture and the ancient sites were our reason for booking this holiday and we were not disappointed! Highlights - Tikal, Copan and the beautiful town of Antigua There is a lot of travelling and this takes a great deal of time due to poor roads and volume of traffic Hotels were good and we stayed in some beautiful locations
Great trip with a mixture of Mayan archaeological sites (Tikal, Copan), natural wonders (waterfalls, Semuc Champey), volcanoes, beaches (Playa Blanca near Livingston) and colourful markets (Chichicastenango) and festivals (Sumpango - Festival de los Barriletes). Antigua I think has more to offer than one day - although the option was there for people to extend as we and a few others did. The big issue was some of the long journeys in the bus. EG Guatemala City to Copan, just over the border in Honduras and a remarkable Mayan site, was 5-6 hours according to the Itinerary but actually the journey took 8 hours. Also, on another route from Flores, we went on a short cut on an unmade road for over an hour. I am 6'1" and the pitch on the bus seats was rather tight and uncomfortable. Pretty much everyone had a degree of stomach issues during the two weeks - I was pretty badly affected!
Activity filled schedule with plenty of sites. “Guatemala time” takes a bit of getting used to but it normally works out in the end. Transport can be a bit hit and miss but we’ll worth it for the Mayan experience.
