This trek was amazing! Our guide was friendly made sure that our safety was top priority and ensured that we were able to reach both of our desired locations even though it was monsoon season.
I believe when you come to the Khumbu region, this is the trek to do. You do not go down the same main route, but instead cross a great pass to have one of the most amazing views imaginable at Gokyo peak!
I had the most amazing opportunity to do the Everest Three Passes with a local travel agency. Coming to Nepal as a solo female, I was a little hesitant trusting just any organization... but within seconds of my first communication I felt relieved and excited to start my trek into the Himalayas. The experience was one of the most memorable of my lifetime...
There is absolutely no doubt that this was the best trip of our lives. We signed up to complete the Ebc & Gokyo lake trek. The first thing that needs to be mentioned is that Gokyo lake is shut during monsoon season so DO NOT book this specific tour for monsoon. We were not able to go to Gokyo lake and were not given a refund for the additional money that we paid. However, reviewing the Everest Base Camp trek - it was fantastic! Our guide Paban was so helpful and knew so much about the mountain. He went above and beyond to ensure that we were safe and happy. He carried out regular blood oxygen checks and helped us through any minor signs of altitude sickness. Our porter Dipak was equally as amazing. He was like a second guide and is really one of the most wonderful people we have ever met. We spent all of our time with these two and they became our second family. Ganga is one of the company owners and he met us in person upon our arrival in Kathmandu to ensure we had all the right equipment and we were prepared for our trek. He provided us with duffle bags, sleeping bags and excellent quality down jackets. He was extremely helpful and contributed towards the success of our trip. He also assisted us in booking a room in his hotel ‘the Woodapple’ at the start and end of our trip which was one of the best hotels in Kathmandu. The EBC trek itself exceeded our expectations. The tea houses were of high quality and the locals were extremely friendly. Paban knew the route extremely well and there was the perfect amount of walking each day. Obviously there were some negatives from going in monsoon season e.g, there was a limited food menu, WiFi was turned off in some of the accommodations and most tea houses and shops were closed. The one thing that we didn’t know, was that actual Everest base camp was shut at this time of year. All the tents come down and there was nothing there except for the famous rock. Just be prepared for this and then you will not be disappointed. However, there were a lot of positives from trekking in the monsoon season which should be considered. The trekking route was extremely quiet which meant that the toilets and tea houses were very clean and we often got the best rooms. Also, the weather was nowhere near as cold and we only had to wrap up warm on the last few days. We were lucky that our flight in and out of Lukla was not delayed but delays are definitely expected at this time of year. One of the main perks of monsoon season was that we pretty much had the mountain to ourselves. Our photos are spectacular as there were no people around. When we reached base camp, we had around an hour to sit and enjoy our achievement. We played music, drank a beer and the moment was magical. In peak season, there is a queue to take a photograph so you would not get this intimate moment. You should definitely consider booking the Everest base camp trek in the monsoon season. We would certainly go at this time of year again. However, the gokyo lake part should not be an option as it’s completely closed. We want to thank Ganga, Paban and Dipak for the best week of our lives and we thoroughly enjoyed our EBC hike.
Great track with amazing views. Specially the views from Gokyo Ri and the fifht lake are more than worth it. It is a shame to skip this part of the track.
