This is a great trip. More challenging than it looks on paper as most of the steepest climbs are off road. We had great weather although it was very hot for the most challenging climb. Even so, we all made it to the top successfully. Javier and Alberto were our guide and transporter and really made the trip special. I didn’t do the Camino for religious purposes but collecting stamps in your pilgrim passport along the way and travelling to the same places as everyone else on the route made this trip a bit different.
We cycled 325km from Leon to Santiago in 6 days with over 5000m of climbing. We saw amazing sights, churches, cathedrals, castles, medieval bridges and forts. Javier and Alberto were great guide and support. The company of the group was great, food amazing and we all arrived safely with a great sense of achievement.
I enjoyed a fabulous trek doing the Camino de Santiago in September. Our leader Aitor was excellent and very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and patient guide. We were fortunate also in enjoying great weather too. The scenery and villages along the way were beautiful. To anyone thinking of doing this trek I would say go ahead! The camardarie from other pilgrims/trekkers along the way was an absolute inspiration too.
The atmosphere along the Camino is great, you quickly lose count of how many time you exchange "Bon Camino" with others on the way. The country side is lovely, especial the closer you get the Santiago. Our guide Daniel was excellent, he kept us going but without being bossy. I don't know how he did it but he created an experience that we all enjoyed. The accommodation was really well chosen - the first night was little bland, but after that we stayed in really charming places, all were clean, comfortable, and welcoming. Our group was quite diverse, both in age, fitness and backgrounds, but we all got on really well - makes the last day rather sad. There is no doubt about it, Spain really is hilly, so be prepared, and the last day is long (I skipped a bit in the van) but well worth it. I'm a vegetarian. The trip notes mention the need to be "flexible". Spain is not the best place for vegi food, Daniel did his best, but don't expect a wide variety - but you should still go!
Having read a couple of books, with regards to the Camino, and being keen walkers my wife and I thought it would be a great challenge and the opportunity to move away from the more traditional summer holiday. We didn't know what to expect but can honestly say it was a fantastic experience. Everything was extremely well organised, from the flights, transfer, our daily accommodation and meals where necessary. The daily distance wasn't too bad as it is split between morning and afternoon with plenty additional stops on the route, if required. Our group of 16, travelled at different paces and that worked very well. We'd often meet up along the road and exchange different experiences of the day. The overall route, is relatively easy, with only a few hills, here and there and three larger ones towards the end. Accommodation, on the route was extremely good. It varied from a log cabin type to a room that had four double beds! Meals were very good and look out for the Pilgrims Menu - 10 euros and plenty of wine.
This is a walk mainly along roads and tracks. It is well signed and walking is good. You meet many people en route of all nationalities and abilities, young and older. We enjoyed the experience. Lots of places to eat and drink along the way. Lovely countryside, villages and small churches. Santiago is a wonderful end to the walk. Mass in the Cathedral was amazing.
