Everything was exceptional, one adjustment I would recommend is to add more free time on Wednesday. The morning walk through an area without a clear path and bushes with ticks could have been avoided. The second part of the day was lovely so perhaps more time by the river or the pool would be nice. I wanted to see the city too and in the end missed the pool time.
Superb trip! The best hiking holiday I have ever done. The location is beautiful with stunning scenery everywhere. The transfer from Bilbao airport to Sotres is 3 hours. We drove for 2 hours, then had a break at a services and then carried on up into the mountains for the last hour. Our guide Juan was fantastic. We stayed in his family run hotel in Sotres, which was just perfect. He and his family looked after us so well. The hikes are well planned and organised with packed lunches each day. Juan's guiding was excellent, he was so knowledgeable about the area and the walks never felt rushed, he looked after us all very well. The hikes are challenging, you definitely need to be confident on very rocky and uneven ground. Also some of the climbs and descents are very steep, so good shoes and poles are required. The food at the hotel was excellent. Juan's son in law is the chef and the dishes he created were fantastic. All dietary needs catered for with no problems. We spent 1 night in Potes at another hotel which was also very nice. It had a pool which was very welcome after that days hike!! I can highly recommend this trip if you like challenging climbs.
Explore have clearly taken on board all of the comments made on previous versions of this trip and have now put together a really excellent itinerary. Each day was busy as we covered a lot of ground but there was plenty of free time to wander round the bigger places and we always arrived at each place in plenty of time for a tour and the opportunity to visit things that were of particular interest to the different people on the trip. Our tour guide, Renske, was really excellent. She made everything go very smoothly and did particularly good walking tours on arrival at each city so that we could get our bearings and she could point out the things to see and do. She also dealt patiently with the myriad of queries and the different interests of people in the group. Our trip was occasionally challenging because of the unexpectedly extremely high temperatures that were experienced at the end of June but even that didn’t take anything away from a great trip with a lovely group of people. For me, particular highlights were Zaragoza and Montserrat and also the beautiful Hopital de Sant Pau which was next to the hotel in Barcelona. We would probably never have seen that if we had not stayed in that area and it was also great to be within walking distance of the Sagrada Familia. I think that wherever you stay in Barcelona you will probably always need to use the metro to see some of the sights but it was easy to use (and much cooler than above ground!) and Explore even through in the metro tickets.
We really enjoyed our tour, our guide Georgina was outstanding. The accommodation was great and each day was timed to perfection with walking, activities, leisure and travel. We also had a great group of fellow travelers.
A Taste of the Camino is a fabulous tour in picturesque northern Portugal and Spain. It has amazing history to delve into and ancient legends in abundance. The journey across the mountains, the Picos de Europa, was stunning. It felt as though we were on top of the world.
Juanjo was an amazing guide, funny and caring. The staff at both hotels were brilliant and helpful and my dietary requirements of no red meat were met generally very well with the feasts that we were provided. The walks had beautiful scenery and Juanjo guided us well, allowing people to walk at different paces. However, if you do not have experience on loose terrain or think you may struggle, you should think carefully as some of the downhills were very technical and loose with some injuries picked up in the group.
