Experience the side of Mumbai that locals live every day and in the company of your guide get ready to explore a day in the life of Mumbai’s dabbawalas, the people who carry home-cooked tiffin-boxes and deliver them to respective offices. Let your guide show you how the dabbawalas disembark the dabbas in their wooden carts from the local train. Watch these dabbawalas segregate the boxes and transfer them in wooden trolleys for delivery. Don’t stop here as you will be escorted towards the platform to board the local train to Mahalaxmi Station.
Arrive at the Mahalaxmi Railway Station and observe how mechanically these dabbawalas work with various alphanumeric color codes they have flawlessly invented over the time. Their methods have been praised and studied by top business schools in the world. As they set out on their task of delivering the boxes to skyscrapers and multinational companies, understand this 125-year-old system, as your guide explains you the trick and tips. The boxes are then driven by 3-4 dabbawalas in different directions for delivery and carried on big bicycles.
Moving ahead, you proceed to the open air laundry area famously known as Dhobi Ghat. A unique feature of Mumbai apart from the rest of the world, a Dhobi is a traditional laundryman who collects your dirty linen, washes them in an open area and then returns them neatly pressed to your doorstep. The massive area where the laundry is done is called a "Dhobi Ghat". The clothes are soaked in soap water, thrashed on huge flogging stones, then tossed into huge vats and hung out to dry. The entire process is non-stop and more than two hundred Dhobis and their families work together in one Dhobi Ghat. Understand the hard work these people have to go through each day, and as the tour comes to an end, you will be dropped back to your hotel.
