I really enjoyed my trip around west Africa. It was well organised and the crew were incredibly hard-working. Enjoyed the bumpy roads through Guinea and Sierra Leone, bush camping, Ganvie stilt village, pirogue trips and tricky border crossings
My only previous experience with Dragoman was from 20 years ago when I did 12 weeks in Central and South America. So I knew what to expect, and having then travelled with other overland tours, I can say Dragoman provides the best experience.
While this trip did not have the scenery, antiquities, adventures of other Dragoman trips, it did expose us to a wonderful aspect of human life little witnessed by the rest of the world.
The group expierience was very important to me. This experience was made possible by the overlanding concept of living together, receiving a role and a task by working in the cooking group and caring for the truck. Thats what a group needs to build. I cannot imagine going on a group tour again only sitting around doing nothing.
Basically its a great trip for meeting local people. Most interesting countries were Togo, Benin and Guinea. I really enjoyed the Voodoo ceremony and watching local drumming/dancing in Benin and Togo.
The trip was good for seeing Ghana as it exists today as a modern, bustling country. The itinerary attempted to give a widespread cover of the country but the poor road conditions and very heavy commercial traffic made the long drives slow, and uncomfortable … with limited viewings in the distant wildlife reserve destinations seeming a “waste of a long challenging drive”. The guide and accommodations were superb.
