I think the trip did cover Thailand well. It was Thailand itself that was not so impressive. A big portion of the trip relating to WW2 was overdone. Bangkok was hot, noisy and overcrowded. Chiang Mai was lovely. Islands off Krabi including world famous Koh Phi Phi were seriously being over exploited. We went on a 4 island tour along with at least 100 other boats. Sanitation on the islands was very poor and with hundreds of people in the water in a limited area we along with many others inevitably got a bout of gastro. The health of the coral was poor. Thailand needs to seriously address this overexploitation.

Each of the excursions on this tour was awesome in its own way--unforgettable! The guides were well informed and took care of us very well. But every day required waking up between four thirty to six thirty and 6-10 hours of transportation through horrible San Jose traffic. (The tour description estimated 3-5 hours per day). On the Tortuga Island day, we were not informed that the bus would pick us up at 5 AM and then spend TWO MORE HOURS picking up other passengers in San Jose before the 2 hour ride to the port and then 2 more hours on a boat. By the end, we were utterly exhausted. Then the driver to the airport didn't arrive so we had to scramble for a last minute taxi to make our flight. Dinner's not included and the neighborhood around our hotel wasn't safe to walk in, so we ended up needing to eat at the same hotel restaurant 6 nights in a row (more chicken fingers, anyone?) because we were too tired to Uber somewhere else. If you go to Costa Rica, I recommend finding a resort to stay in and then doing 1-2 excursions during your week-long trip so you aren't spending your whole trip in traffic.

My trip was wonderful -- I can't say enough good things about Mario and his team! I was travelling solo, and they worked with me to customize the itinerary to be exactly what I needed alongside a work trip I had right before. All of the guides and other staff members were very professional, kind, and prepared. Pickups were on time, and even mundane drives were filled with interesting information and good conversation. Special shoutout to Alberto, who took me to Tortuguero and was so knowledgeable about wildlife (and whose keen eyes spotted some spider monkeys on the drive home, enabling us to stop and see them and some howler monkeys). A true highlight! But everyone was wonderful -- definitely recommend.

Overall, this was a good package for first time visit at Costa Rica. The travel team (Jean Carlo) was super responsive by answering all our questions and providing fixes with our issues, particularly when it comes to the hotel issue we encountered on our first night at KC Hotel where the shower didn't work. I think the highlight was definitely the White Water Rafting experience with our guide, Roberto who made it extremely fun. Agree with previous folks' assessment on the hotel at Arenal, that was really great and we would go back in a heartbeat. We were definitely surprised that Monteverde lodge did not have AC, although it was relatively cool when we were there so we really didn't need it. All said and done, we had a great time with the excursions, especially the horseback riding at Exuus Farm, and the ziplining activity with 100% Adventure which well made up for some of the accommodation/transport issues. All the excursions were definitely 4 stars in our book.

Overall the trip was great. The excursions and tour guides we had were all excellent. The hotel in Arenal was nice but the hotel in Monteverde did not have air conditioning in the room or a pool. There was some confusion around a couple of the bus transfers. The night we arrived we were told in our communication to look for a driver holding up our name. There was nobody. We contacted GWT on the 24 hour WhatsApp number and after about half an hour were told that we should get a cab and they will look into it on Monday. Eventually we were told that it was a typo in the communication because the actual itinerary did not have a transfer from the airport included. The transfer back to San Jose at the end of the trip turned a 3 hour drive into a long 6 hour one. First we had to switch buses and drivers half way through resulting in over an hour wait at a rest stop. When we got to San Jose the driver brought us to the wrong hotel, due to a system error on their end. I tried texting the WhatsApp line during that time and still haven’t received a response 5 days later. Not a great way to end the trip.

This tour provider hits it out of the park on the big wins: safety, logistics, and expertise. Their guides conducted twice daily health checks, measuring blood oxygen to ensure we were acclimating appropriately and they had medication ready to cover any malady. On summit day they carried oxygen as a safety measure that I found necessary after experiencing altitude sickness and the team even provided it to another suffering climber whose guides were not carrying oxygen. Not all guide services have these safety measures! The logistics flow was impressive from the get-go with airport and hotel shuttles. The camp logistics on-mountain was even more so. We’d depart camp after breakfast, they’d have tea and snacks set up along the trail, and we’d arrive at lunch to find the mess tent already set up with lunch ready, just to find it and our sleeping tents set up again at the end of the hike with tea and popcorn waiting and dinner shortly to follow. The consideration that the Porter team put into our comfort was overwhelming. The expertise of the team was unquestionable. The company clearly takes hiring very seriously and recruits knowledgeable guides. Professionals across the board whom we greatly trusted. With the big wins checked off in style, the company goes above and beyond with personal touches that make the trip truly memorable. I think the most memorable for us was the tradition and ceremony that the team brought to the experience - celebratory group singing and dancing especially, even cakes and champagne! Then small things like hot water bottles to keep sleeping bags warm really made us feel well cared for.
