Off the beaten track cycling through the unspoiled Balkan Mountains of Bulgaria. The Balkan Mountains are famous for lush green valleys, sheer cliffs and gentle rolling hills with sheep grazing peacefully in their pastures. Starting from the tiny village of Goliam Izvor there is enormous opportunity for unique cycling. Passing through the Central Balkan National Park, the narrow roads meander through valleys, forests and quaint villages that have not changed for centuries. Wooden carts pulled by horse or donkey are the norm and farmers still make hay with a pitchfork. Along the route you will visit several of the country's most significant and historic Orthodox monasteries. Many churches with ancient icons and colourful murals are scattered throughout the region. The final cycling stage ends in Veliko Tarnovo - one of the most charming Balkan towns and the former Bulgarian capital.

Discover cloud forests, volcanoes and plantations on this exotic Spanish island. Your first view of the great volcano Mount Teide (3718m, 12188ft) will probably be from the aeroplane window. A day or two later you will be there, walking across the Cañadas del Teide, a massive crater of 16km diameter to arrive at the unrivalled Parador Las Cañadas del Teide, your overnight stop (2200m).
Mount Teide is Spain's highest mountain and the third tallest volcano in the world. Tenerife is the highest island in the Atlantic and is the largest of the Canary Islands at 1275 square miles, 2053 km2. Walking on North Tenerife is hugely varied and our aim is to show you as much as possible. After the Cañadas del Teide adventure, you explore the north west of the island with its own mountain range, the Teno and views across the sea to the island of La Gomera and down the cliffs to the impossibly located village of Masca. Finally, there is a walk in the rugged Anaga Peninsula - its top is covered in dripping ancient 'laurisilva' woodland. Descending past fertile cultivated fields, tiny villages, then dry cactus strewn valleys, you'll reach the rocky coast of this stunning Canary Island.

Join this fascinating 8-days cruise starting from Bodrum in the Gulf of Gokova, which is located 25 km away from Mugla province on the shores of Turkey's Aegean region, which is also known as the Kerme Bay. An exciting family cycling adventure along a flat, traffic free section of the Danube River. This flat stretch of the Danube which is free of traffic and packed full of attractions, is an ideal introduction to cycle touring for all of the family. There is plenty of variety including a donkey adventure, boat rides on the Danube, historic sites such as the Melk Monastery and beautiful landscapes that will inspire children and adults alike. The path is completely paved and follows the river for most of the itinerary. The picturesque riverside region of the Wachau Valley leads you to the town of Spitz. From there you can visit Melk by boat, have some fun at the donkey farm and explore the surrounds. On arrival in Vienna there is a world of music and food for all to embrace.

This was a fairly tough walking trip, with three challenging days (long days, lots of uphill) and two easier days. Certainly not one for the casual, uncommitted weekend walker! The two-night stay in the basic Curmatura hut was not made easier by the very very limited water supply (it was a trickle). There were 15 of us in the group and I thought that was too many for a hard walking trip of this type; 8-10 would have been ideal. The visits to the two castles (Peles and Bran) do not belong on this trip, in my opinion, as they resulted in unnecessarily late finishes to the walking on those days. The final day (Friday) in Bucharest could have been arranged much better, I thought, to avoid us sitting on a bus in traffic for ages. Why not take people straight to the hotel and then explore the city on foot from there?
