A brilliant trip, covering the most important sites in Uzbekistan as well as lesser known places. The tour guide was kind, considerate, very knowledgable and lots of fun. Travelling in a small group was so much more enjoyable than some of the big bus loads we encountered. Another great trip from Explore!
This was our first time on an organised tour so we were unsure what to expect. But the experience was wonderful: very well organised, helpful and full of opportunities to capture what was best about the places we visited. Our two tour guides were excellent in every respect: very well informed and sympathetic, as were the additional experts. Only slight disappointment was the change in timetable that led to us having only an afternoon in Khiva. The small group nature of the tour was crucial as it allowed us to bond with our fellow explorers.
Everything I would expect from Explore! Thought Hotel Mary was scraping the bottom of the barrel even for a basic hotel. Overall a fantastic experience with tour leaders and guides who were both knowledgeable and passionate about their respective countries.
The trek in the Fann Mountains was a stand out. I would do it again despite it pushing me to my limits at times. It was like stepping into a fantasy novel- the colours, the remoteness and to my eyes the strangeness as well as the mountainous glories. The guides, cooks, porters were very supportive and I felt safe at all times. The food was excellent- even though everyone managed to get sour stomachs- it was maybe the strangeness factor. Cultural visits also well curated.
The Silk road tour offered everything I expected and more. From the alpine scenery in Kyrgyzstan to the deserts of Uzbekistan, each day was a new adventure with something new to experience. Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan seemed untouched by mass tourism and even Uzbekistan was fairly quiet compared to other destinations I've visited previously. Hotels were good quality with a variety of room types and location, included meals were all of a high standard and the guides were excellent. There were plenty of WOW moments throughout this itinerary.
This was a busy trip through three very contrasting countries. Almost a surfeit of historical monuments in Uzbekistan, just a glimpse of Kazakhstan and then the natural beauty of Kyrgyzstan. Some long bus drives but with plenty of "photo stops" and the drives are a great way to appreciate the scenery and see a little of local life along the way. The food was fine, and it was fairly easy to avoid meat, with plenty of delicious salads and pumpkin manti (a type of dumpling) usually available. Also some lovely soups, but often with unexpected chunks of lamb or beef. I did also enjoy the plov and the kebabs, as well as the fresh bread. The people were mostly friendly, welcoming and curious - we encountered no problems.
