The incredible city of Istanbul is full of fascinating wonders. You can best explore the city on guided Istanbul tours. Aside from the Big Four—the Hagia Sophia Mosque, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and Grand Bazaar— Istanbul has many other amazing sights worth a visit in Turkey. Explore attractions in the farther reaches of the city, such as the Belgrad Forest, which has many scenic hiking trails. Other places worth a day trip from Istanbul are the Gallipoli War Cemeteries and the archaeological site of Troy.

'Turkey In Depth' was an excellent tour. I was particularly impressed with the Tour guide, Oz, who went out of his way to ensure that we all had a memorable time. We had two tour members with personal medical conditions that arose during the tour and Oz was very sensitive to their needs, discreetly arranging hospital visits for them while ensuring the tour progress was unaffected. His knowledge of the various places we visited was excellent and his sense of humour was delightful. All members of the tour were seasoned travellers and they were all very friendly and interesting people. We had a very good time together. The places visited were fascinating and the hotels were generally of a good standard. There is a large amount of bus travel between the sites visited, which potential travellers should bear in mind, but the bus we travelled in was very comfortable. The tour is definitely 'Full On' as described. A reasonable level of fitness is necessary as there is a lot of walking around ancient sites with uneven, often slippery paths as well as lots of steps. Overall, this was an excellent tour that gave great insight into this wonderful country and its ancient history. I recommend it highly as it exceeded my expectations.

Such an amazing experience. Our guide was exceptional as was out driver. They looked after our every need and advised on places to eat. I love that Explore support the local community. Nice range of hotels, smaller and more intimate. Amazing history. Sailing was my favourite day! Gallipoli was very sad. Istanbul was amazing! Ephesus was huge! The group was small and we all got on really well. No stress at all. The perfect adventure! Such an insight into an amazing country. Thank you!

Explore stated this tour was "full on". Indeed it was but we saw and learned so much. We were a small group of 13 which was great. Yusef our tour guide was so knowledgeable and made the whole tour fun. Arti our bus driver was also amazing driving through busy cities, narrow streets and narrow, winding mountain roads. I would highly recommend this tour.

Excellent 14 day tour of Turkey from Istanbul through Ankara and Cappadocia then onto Antalya and Kaş before moving onto Pammuckale, Selcuk and Cannakale. The tour guide was knowledgeable and you could tell his love for Turkey. He was inclusive in activities. The only thing was that he set a fast pace when walking and didn’t really stop or slow during these walks until he got to where he wanted to be to talk about an item or historical event. I’ve not encountered this on any other tour I’ve been on. You could quite easily get left behind and he wouldn’t know where you were. Besides that this jam packed tour was great, although I’m sure you’ve already been told before that more than one night in Antalya would be better considering you don’t arrive there till the evening on this tour

Great trip if you want a fast paced view of what Turkey has to offer. You'll see the main cultural and historical sites, lots of interesting geography, get to swim in the sea and be looked after by a knowledgeable guide.

The itinerary was excellent - for me! But it should be clearer that it involves a lot of walking. Infirm travellers were disadvantaged (which also slowed us some). Our tour director was very knowledgeable and was able to make the sites we visited come alive for us.

Istanbul — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Travel Highlights

  • The Hagia Sophia is the highlight of all Istanbul tours. Constructed in the sixth century, the Hagia Sophia is one of the world’s largest cathedrals that was converted into a mosque in the 15th century and a museum in 1935.
  • Your Istanbul visit will not be complete without stopping by Sultanahmet Mosque, also called the Blue Mosque. Built around the early 17th century, the Blue Mosque is one of the world's most impressive monuments.
  • Exploring the Topkapi Palace should be one of the top things to do in Turkey for all visitors. The vast Harem complex features a dazzling display of Islamic art, including intricate tile work.
  • The Basilica Cistern is a must-visit on your Istanbul tours. It is a massive subterranean cistern with hundreds of columns arranged in 12 rows.
  • Never leave Istanbul without visiting the Grand Bazaar, a vast covered market featuring thousands of shops scattered across dozens of streets. Exercise your bargaining skills when making a purchase.

Travel Tips

  • If you are looking for something authentic to try in Istanbul while touring Turkey, order a cup of Yayik ayran, a bubbly yogurt drink. Although it can serve as a standalone drink, it goes really well with any savory dish.
  • When visiting a mosque, schedule your visit outside of prayer time. No one is allowed to enter the mosques during prayer times, which also applies at the Sultanahmet Mosque, one of the city's top attractions.
  • Aside from spices, Grand Bazaar also sells herbal remedies that can cure different illnesses.
  • When shopping for Turkish delights, head to Altan Sekerleme, a classic candy shop that opened in 1865. It is a family-run shop that sells authentic Turkish delights. In fact, many Istanbul tours will take tourists to this famous shop.
