Introducing Laos
Tucked between Thailand and Vietnam, Laos is Southeast Asia’s hidden gem that offers numerous off-the-beaten-path experiences. Take in the colonial charms of Vientiane. Drift lazily along the Nam Song River in Vang Vieng and travel back in time to Wat Phou, the lesser-known cousin of Angkor Wat. Then enjoy the laid-back vibes of Huay Xai before flying home.

When to go to Laos
You will get the most out of Laos if you coincide your visit to fall in the period between November and March. The weather is welcoming to travelers right across the country during these months. Alternatively, you can opt for the months of July and August, although it means that you will have to contend with larger crowds. There is little change in temperatures during the rest of the year (April to June and September to October), with daytime averages of around 30°C. However, Laos sees quite a bit of rainfall in September and October, which can wash out your dream vacation. Learn more.
How long to stay in Laos
Laos does not receive anywhere near the number of visitors as its neighbors. But that does not mean there is a limited number of things to do or destinations to explore. We always suggest planning a Laos itinerary that lasts two weeks. This gives you enough time to go bargain hunting in the markets of Vientiane, see the gilded temples of Luang Prabang and enjoy some time in the villages around the mighty Mekong.
Do not worry if two weeks are beyond your means, though. You can still discover a slice of this country even if you have three to five days. Learn more.
Must-visit destinations in Laos
In addition to the Unesco World Heritage site of Luang Prabang, those heading out to Laos should add a trip to Pakse, located in the far south, in their itinerary. Visit Nam Ha National Biodiversity Conservation Area to get a sense of the country’s geographical and natural diversity. Then gaze at the languid cascades of the Kuang Si Falls and hike through the dramatic mountains of Vang Vieng, the erstwhile party capital of the country.
