Yearning for a once-in-a-lifetime desert experience? The eight-day private Trekking in the Moroccan Sahara tour leads adventurous souls through sweeping dunes, rugged canyons, and hidden oases. Starting in Marrakech, journey across the Black Desert, Ramlia, Ouzina, and the famed dunes of Merzouga, with camels available to assist when needed. Nights are spent far from civilization, camping under starlit skies, with the comforts of local guesthouses or optional hotels along the way. The USP of this trip lies in its authentic nomadic adventure—guided by experts, you’ll traverse remote landscapes and immerse yourself in the raw beauty of the Sahara.
Your tour guide will pick you up from your riad or hotel in Marrakech and drive to the High Atlas Mountains. Stop for pictures along the road. Lunch will be served in Ouarzazate before you continue to the Draa Valley.
Reach your camp in the middle of nowhere before sunset. The camp will be prepared by our expert team of camel riders. The total driving distance today is eight to nine hours. Dinner will be served in the camp.
Start your adventure after breakfast. You can choose between walking or riding a camel today. Traverse a section of the Black Desert (the locals call it hamada), then cross small dunes to reach an old kasbah where we will spend our second night. It will be a picnic lunch today.
Cross the dry riverbed of the Ghriss River to reach Ramlia, a small oasis in the middle of nowhere. Visit a Berber house and enjoy a cup of tea before heading for the dunes where lies your desert camp. You can take a shower in one of the small guesthouses in the area.
Continue your journey through the desert after breakfast. The lunar landscape of sand, barren hills and canyons is permeated with the sense of an otherworldly beauty. A small oasis will serve as a stopover for lunch prepared by your team.
The hike continues after lunch as you conquer dunes after dunes of sand to reach our camp located in Ouzina. Included in the itinerary today is a meeting with a nomadic family with whom you will share tea.
Hike for around three hours after breakfast before jumping into an off-road vehicle and heading for Merzouga, which has some of the highest sand dunes in Morocco. Along the way, we will stop at Taous, an area of archaeological importance that is famous for its rock carvings.
Lunch will be served in Khamlia where you will get the chance to try Berber pizza, a local speciality, before driving to the camp. Why not head for the dunes to enjoy a beautiful sunset? Please note that you also have the option to spend the night in a hotel instead of a camp.
After breakfast, it is time to conquer some of the highest dunes of Erg Chebbi. We will then stop by a small desert oasis before continuing further to Merzouga village. Take some amazing pictures as you travel through the ocean of sand. Reach your accommodation, a guesthouse in the village, by evening.
Time to cover the rest of the journey in comfort. Hop into the car and head for the Dades Valley. Along the way is Rissani, where a local market is organized every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Reach Tinghir Valley by lunchtime. Tinghir is a beauty to behold, a lush green oasis with red mountains in the background. Visit the Todra Gorges, one of the most popular landmarks in Morocco, and continue to the Dades Valley where you will spend the last night of this trip.
Head for Marrakech after breakfast. The journey today will take you through the Valley of the Roses. Stop along the route to visit Kasbah Amridil and Aït Benhaddou, the latter of which has featured in numerous Hollywood movies. Traverse the High Atlas Mountains and see quaint Berber villages along the way. Your journey comes to an end on reaching Marrakech.
