Overview

Take a journey back in time on this fascinating self-guided half-day tour of Fuerte Bulnes and Parque del Estrecho. Located just 52 km south of Punta Arenas, Fuerte Bulnes was the first Chilean settlement in the region, established in 1843, and it played a crucial role in the founding of Punta Arenas. The fort was rebuilt between 1941-1943 and is now a national historical monument. As you explore this fort, you’ll encounter beautifully restored buildings made from native wood, including the chapel, prison, and cannons courtyard.
The park itself, which is located on the shores of the Strait of Magellan, offers incredible views and the chance to spot local wildlife. Along the way, you can see sea birds such as oystercatchers, wild geese, ducks, and the famous Patagonian cormorants. With a bit of luck, you may also see dolphins and sea lions in the waters of the Strait. The park’s walking trails, including the Bosque del Viento (Wind Forest) trail and the coastal trail, offer excellent opportunities for bird watching and photography, with views of the strait and Puerto del Hambre, the historic site founded in 1584.
The tour also includes a visit to the Museum at Fuerte Bulnes, where you can learn about the natural history and colonial heritage of the region. This is a great opportunity to delve into the fascinating stories of the first settlers and explorers in the region.
Important note: Please note that some museums are closed on Mondays, so plan your visit accordingly.
This tour is ideal for history buffs, nature lovers, and anyone looking to explore the stunning landscapes of Patagonia in an intimate and informative way.
