Your first stop is Jama Masjid, a highly decorative mosque built of red sandstone and white marble with three large gates, four towers, and two 40-meter-high minarets. Travelers are permitted to hire robes at the northern gate. This may be the only time you find yourself looking like a local without feeling like a stranger! Roam to India Gate, next in New Delhi city center. This 42-meter-high archway commemorates the sacrifice made during the First World War by 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army. We will then take you to the gigantic Red Fort, a historic fort that rises above the clamor of Old Delhi and was formed by the Mughals. It's a city of wide boulevards impressive government buildings, green parks and gardens. In 1911 King George V announced the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to Delhi. The King's architects, Lutyens and Baker, set in motion the design and construction of Delhi's eighth city - New Delhi. Lutyens designed an imperial city which had palatial-sized buildings set amid broad tree-lined avenues punctuated by Mughal style gardens, complete with fountains and shallow pools. It took 20 years to complete this immense undertaking only to have the British pack up and relinquish the subcontinent in 1947. You will also visit two monuments from Delhi's past - Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar. Your drive takes you along the ceremonial avenue, the imposing India Gate and Parliament House. As described the tour is full on but its so worth it to see so much. This tour really throws you into Indian history and witnessing day-to-day life was fascinating. You cover a lot of ground with some very long travel days but the sites around Rajasthan make up for it with stops always providing interest. The hotels were great with a good mix between heritage properties and the modern facilities. Gajner Palace hotel was a particular highlight and the setting is incredible.
