The Lemosho route is one of the newer routes leading to Mount Kilimanjaro, and a superb choice for your climb. It is our preferred route due to its ideal balance of low traffic, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. The route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the rainforest to Shira Ridge.
Unlike the popular Machame route, which simply intersects the Shira Plateau, the Lemosho route crosses the entirety of the plain from west to east in a pleasant, relatively flat hike. An added bonus is that climbers will encounter low traffic until the route joins the Machame route. Afterwards, Lemosho follows the same route through Lava Tower, Barranco and Barafu, known as the southern circuit. Descent is made via the Mweka route.
Lemosho is considered the most scenic route on Kilimanjaro, and grants panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain.

Experience stunning panoramic views on one of the world’s most renowned treks when you join us on this iconic climb of Africa’s tallest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro.
This trek takes you on the popular Marangu route, which uses comfortable trekking lodges for the overnight accommodation. You’ll be climbing for five hard and breathless days to reach the summit so you better be fit. We also add in one acclimatisation day en-route to give you a bit more time on the mountain and to give you the best chance of reaching the summit. We recommend you do plenty of training before undertaking this challenge, but when you reach the summit the spectacular views out across the African landscape will make all the hard work and pain so worthwhile. This month-long Africa overland trip gives you the ultimate family adventure to enjoy with your children on one of our famous yellow overland trucks. Connecting our Tanzania Family Overland, and Deserts & Delta Family Overland trips, this combined tour gives you 29 days exploring some of Africa's biggest highlights and experiences.
Starting in Tanzania, you have the opportunity to get up close to the amazing wildlife in the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, home to Wildebeest, Zebra, Gazelle, Giraffes, Elephants, Rhino and big cats - the opportunity to spot wildlife on offer is second to none. As well as the safaris, we will visit Masai villages, and stay in a local village at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, before we head to the coast. We'll take a short ferry crossing to the exotic island of Zanzibar, and enjoy a tour of Stone Town and a spice farm, as well has having several days to relax on the beautiful white sandy beaches at the north of the island. Here there are also many water sports options, including snorkelling, scuba diving, jet skis and kite surfing.
From Zanzibar you take a flight to Lusaka or Victoria Falls to re-join the truck (flight not included). After seeing the falls we visit Chobe National Park in Botswana, and the pan handle of the Okavango Delta in Namibia's Caprivi Strip. Continuing through Namibia we go on safari in Etosha National Park, famous for its desert elephants, before continuing south to Ozohere Himba Village and Cape Cross Seal Colony. After passing shipwrecks sitting on the desert sands of the Skeleton Coast, we’ll visit Swakopmund, known as the adventure capital of Namibia where thrilling activities, such as skydiving, sandboarding and scenic flights above the stark landscape of the mountainous dunes are available. Coming towards the end of our trip, our next highlight is Namib-Naukluft National Park and Sossusvlei where we'll climb up the famous Dune 45 in the Namib Desert and see the ancient scorched black trees in the Deadvlei clay-pan. Finally we travel to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital and journey’s end.
The trip starts in Nairobi, and finishes in Windhoek, with airport transfers included throughout. Accommodation is a mix of hotels/lodges, permanent camps, and in simple tents next to our truck. Travel is mainly on one of our specialist overland expedition vehicles with an experienced tour leader and driver on board. In the Serengeti we use specialist safari vehicles, and use a minibus after arriving on Zanzibar.
This family tour has a minimum age requirement of 5 years, with discounted prices available for children aged from 5 to 15. Our trucks have 24 seats on the back, and the group will be a minimum of 8 people and maximum of 18 (plus crew).
